I’m a hairdresser and you’ve been washing your hair wrong – once is never enough, how much it REALLY needs

HAIR experts have gone back and forth about what washing your hair “too often” looks like, but one hairdresser revealed the debate has been focused on the wrong timeline.

Instead of wondering if you wash your hair enough on a weekly basis, you should question if you’re shampooing enough each time you shower.

Taylor Murphy is a Connecticut-based hairstylist whose TikTok account, MadeAndTaylored, has 1million followers.

As Murphy explained, one of her clients recently came into the shop begging for help with dandruff.

“Good news, it’s not dandruff,” Murphy told the client. Instead, it was buildup: products and natural oils that were caked onto the scalp.

“If your scalp isn’t clean, your hair isn’t clean,” Murphy emphasized.

Even though many shampoos say “rinse and repeat” on the bottle, most consumers only wash their hair one time, which is a disservice to their scalp health, Murphy said.

In fact, depending on how much buildup you have, you may need to shampoo up to four times in the shower.

After Murphy explained to her client that her scalp had buildup, not dandruff, she asked the woman to demonstrate her shampoo technique with her hands.

That revealed another common mistake: the client showed how she used open palms to rub shampoo into her scalp.

“We’re not doing that anymore,” Murphy explained. “You have to get in there with your fingertips.”

Murphy said that until you can feel the shampoo bubbles against your scalp, your hair is not clean.

It may seem like a lot of work to shampoo, rinse and repeat as necessary until your scalp is clean, but Murphy swears the extra time and effort will pay off in big ways.

“When you’re focusing on washing your scalp instead of washing your hair, you’re going to be able to go longer in between washes,” she explained.

Plus, when your scalp is clean, your hair smells better and growth is encouraged, because “it’s not being blocked by all that buildup.”

Murphy also said that while there’s a lot of debate surrounding the “right” amount of times per week to wash your hair, there’s no perfect number of days to go between washes.

Some people can only go two days, while others can go up to two weeks, Murphy said. As long as your care routine is consistent and customized for your hair needs, you’ll be okay.

“The main goal is to make sure that you’re treating your hair properly and cleaning your hair properly,” Murphy said.

“Show your scalp some love the next time you wash your hair,” she concluded.

“I bet you money, you’ll notice a difference.”
