Two fans in a passing car identified the star and began shouting “up the Mac”.

But seconds later there were flashing lights and the sound of a siren as a police car beckoned McGregor over to the side of the road, with the fighter complying.

McGregor was arrested for “road traffic offences” and taken to Lucan police station, where he was later given bail.

And it has not taken long for the fighter to protest his innocence on Twitter, retweeting several people who came to his defence on the social media platform.

One tweet read: “If this is driving dangerously like you all were saying then arrest me too lol. He’s just minding his own business driving to the gym!”

Another said: “He literally did nothing wrong? Lmao. Fan boy cops.”

A third fan wrote: “Are we really calling this a crime???”

The Dubliner then tweeted a single thumbs up emoji to show his thanks for the support he has received.

In Ireland a dangerous driving charge in Ireland can carry punishments of up to £4,100 in fines and even a potential six-month imprisonment.

McGregor was previously fined £330 for speeding in November 2017.

The former world champion will now have to appear before Blanchardstown district court in April, and the video of the incident may well be used as evidence in the case.

The Notorious’ car was reportedly seized at the scene before eventually being returned.

A local police spokesman confirmed to the Irish Independent that a man was detained ‘in relation to the incident’.

Their full statement read: “Gardai arrested a man aged in his 30s in relation an incident of dangerous driving in the Palmerstown area yesterday evening, Tuesday 22nd March 2022.

“The man was taken to Lucan Garda Station where he was later charged. He has been released pending an appearance before Blanchardstown District Court at a later date.”
