Everything We Know About Our Flag Means Death Season 2
Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Our Flag Means Death's season 1 finale.
The first season of Our Flag Means Death has come to a close and audiences are anxiously awaiting news regarding the series' renewal and updates for Our Flag Means Death season 2. The show has built up a strong following in a short amount of time and garnered overwhelmingly positive reviews. However, it remains to be seen if HBO Max will allow the adventures of the Revenge and its crew to continue.
Loosely based upon the unbelievable but true story of Gentleman Pirate Stede Bonnet, Our Flag Means Death has won acclaim from a variety of audiences. Comedy fans love the series for its humor and many discovered it because of its cast, which is full of talented comedic performers such as Rhys Darby of Flight of the Conchords and What We Do In The Shadows' Taikia Waititi. The show has also built up a strong following among the LGBTQ+ community because of its diverse ensemble and its portrayal of gender-fluid and gay characters.
Our Flag Means Death season 1 ends on a major cliffhanger, with Blackbeard having stolen Stede Bonnet's ship, Revenge. He also regresses into his old persona, having had his heart broken by the inexperienced captain after Stede returned to his wife after getting a pardon instead of escaping custody with Blackbeard. This represents Our Flag Means Death's biggest change from the true story of Stede Bonnet and Edward "Blackbeard" Teach and establishes the chief conflict of a potential second season. Here's everything that we know about Our Flag Means Death season 2.
Our Flag Means Death has yet to be renewed for a second season. Thankfully for fans of the show, it has also not been officially canceled. Hopes are high, however, that the confirmation of Our Flag Means Death season 2 was being held for after the series' first season finale. Considering how well-received it's been, it's hard to believe that it won't get the green light for a second season.
The biggest question regarding a potential Our Flag Means Death season 2 is how true the series intends to remain to the historical record and the final fates of Stede Bonnet and Blackbeard. While the two captains did sail together for a time, they parted ways in the summer of 1718 and met their deaths before the end of the year. Given that the show presumes a level of friendship between Stede Bonnet and Blackbeard that doesn't fit the known facts (to say nothing of the romance that blooms between them in the penultimate episode) it would not be impossible for the remainder of the series to abandon historical accuracy completely and build toward giving Stede and Ed a happy ending. Beyond that, Our Flag Means Death season 2 would need to address the fate of Jim (who was abducted by Blackbeard and his men) and the question of whether or not Lucius somehow survived his apparent death at the hands of Blackbeard after being thrown overboard.
If Our Flag Means Death season 2 is renewed, it may be some time before audiences can watch it. The chief obstacle will likely be the availability of Taikia Waititi, who is in high demand as a screenwriter, producer, and director and is currently at work on both a Time Bandits television series for Apple TV, an untitled Star Wars film, and the post-production for Thor: Love & Thunder, among other projects. Even if Waititi is immediately available for filming, it will likely be the fall of 2023 at the earliest before a second season of Our Flag Means Death is released on HBO Max.
