Peaky Blinders Season 6 Finale Confirmed To Be A Feature-Length Episode

0

The Peaky Blinders series finale runtime will be as long as a feature film. Peaky Blinders season 6 episode 1 premiered on February 27, 2022, ushering in the last season of the acclaimed BBC drama. Following its conclusion, fans of the show are also anticipating the release of a spinoff film recently announced by show creator Steven Knight.

Set during the aftermath of World War I in Birmingham, England, Peaky Blinders follows the exploits of a gang loosely based on the real-life group of the same name who were active in the city. Primarily centered around boss Tommy Shelby, played by Cillian Murphy, the show also features an ensemble cast that includes the late Helen McCrory, Paul Anderson, and Joe Cole as other important gang members. The show premiered on BBC Two in September 2013, with the network moving the show to BBC One for season 5 and continuing for Peaky Blinders' series-ending season 6.

In an interview with RadioTimes.com, the show's director, Anthony Byrne, confirms that the Peaky Blinders season 6 finale will mirror a feature film in both length and scope. With a running time of 81 minutes, Byrne fondly notes that the bold artistic move reflects the often cheekily irreverent themes of the show, calling the length "such a Peaky thing to do." Check out the rest of his comment below, which also refers to the upcoming spinoff:

It feels very, very different to the rest of the season. It feels very, very different to anything we've done before. It's very epic in scope. It feels like a film – it's a kind of dry run for the feature film.

Unlike many hit shows that suffer from declining quality in later seasons, Peaky Blinders has enjoyed continuous acclaim across its nine-year run. The show has also accumulated a lengthy cast list - a plethora of name actors, such as Sam Neill, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Adrian Brody, guest-starred on the show, speaking to its relevancy and high-quality standard. The extravagant goodbye only seems appropriate, given the episode is tasked with both satisfyingly reckoning with its ending and setting up the movie yet to come.

Peaky Blinders' success, though, extends beyond its relatively humble origins as a small BBC show. Fascinatingly, its exploration of the plight of the British working class speaks to an underrepresented facet of society, so much so that the British Office of National Statistics officially confirmed its detectable cultural impact in the UK in one of its reports. Furthermore, the show's success in other countries illustrates the broad appeal of its fundamental quality of storytelling. Thus, a cinematic finale and subsequent Peaky Blinders spinoff movie of  only seems appropriate and deserved as a farewell to the series.
