Boruto's Latest Twist Gave One Villain More Depth Than Anyone Realized
Warning! Spoilers ahead for Boruto: Naruto Next Generations chapter 68!
The latest twist that Boruto is now 100% Ōtsutsuki will have many lasting implications on his character, but what fans missed is how the villain Eida initially reacts to the news - proving that she's a much deeper and more mysterious character than originally believed.
While Eida (or Ada)'s ongoing appeal in Boruto is her rather shallow crushes on Boruto and Kawaki, the original depth to her character that lent these comedic predicaments nuance was the tragedy that drove her obsessions. Anyone who sees Eida immediately falls in love with her or. Although this can be beneficial, the villain views this affliction as a curse since she desires someone to love her for real and not because of her powers. Those who can resist her are few and far between. Besides blood relatives, only those who are part of the Ōtsutsuki clan are immune to this effect, and since Boruto and Kawaki are the only surviving Ōtsutsuki because of their Karma, that makes them perfect mates for Eida.
There's a catch, however. Neither Boruto or Kawaki are pure Ōtsutsuki, so they would only partially be immune to Eida's charms. But Eida is so desperate that she's willing to deal with a partner who only partly loves her. In the end, she chose Kawaki. She doesn't even flinch when Boruto ostensibly dies (and she freaks out when her partner Code does so little as almost damage Kawaki). But when Boruto does in fact not die and becomes 100% Ōtsutsuki, readers assumed that Eida would immediately drop everything for Boruto, but as of chapter 68, that isn't the case. In fact, when she provides Code with this little tidbit of information, in the same breath, she not only refers to Boruto as Code's "precious Ten-Tails sacrifice" but reminds Code that his job is to bring Kawaki to her.
Even though Code did choose Boruto to be his sacrifice for the Ten-Tails, that status could easily transfer over to Kawaki since Code only needs an Ōtsutsuki to create his coveted Divine Tree. Code and Eida's agreement is only predicated on Eida getting a mate and Code getting his sacrifice. So, Eida could decide to mate with Boruto, allowing Code to use Kawaki as his sacrifice to the Ten-Tails instead. In fact, Code would undoubtedly prefer this alternative just based on his past dealings with Kawaki. When recently clashing with the young Ōtsutsuki, Code expressed dissatisfaction at having to spare his life because of his earlier agreement with Eida. So, there's nothing forcing Eida to choose Kawaki. Additionally, she has the power to make the switch herself since it's obvious that she's in charge. She's even promised that once Code is no longer of use to her she'll dispose of him.
So why doesn't Eida force Code to switch? It's hard to tell, and it's for that reason why Eida is a much deeper villain than fans originally believed. Eida has expressed utter hatred for Amado since he was the one who heavily modified her with the ability to steal almost anyone's heart. She's also made it clear that she's driven by her desire to experience ordinary love, and with Boruto now being 100% Ōtsutsuki instead of human, he should be the answer to her prayers since she can't steal any portion of his heart. So why is she settling for Kawaki whose love would only be partially authentic? It's possible that she actually has legitimate feelings for Kawaki even though her actions have proven that she is completely superficial and only attracted to both him and Boruto because they are Ōtsutsuki.
