Mandy Director Teams With A24 For New Sci-Fi Horror Film
Panos Cosmatos will follow up his 2018 sleeper hit Mandy with another original horror film, Nekrokosm, in partnership with A24. Mandy was a vehicle for Nicolas Cage's on-screen madness, something he aims to channel once again in the upcoming movie Renfield as Dracula, albeit in a slightly different way. Cage surprised audiences with his visceral performance in the psychedelic revenge thriller, and Cosmatos turned into something of a darling within the circles of unconventional cinema almost overnight. The director took about eight years to actualize his vision for Mandy but looks to complete his next project much quicker than that.
According to THR, Cosmatos will team with arthouse studio A24 for his follow-up. He will also reunite with Nate Bolotin and his production company, XYZ Films, who worked with Cosmatos on 2018's Mandy. Though Nekrokosm's plot details are currently under wraps, it is said to be a "phantasmagorical fantasy nightmare" concerning a pair of lovers in a strange galaxy separated by an invasion. It's not the Mandy sequel that Cosmatos teased, but Nekrokosm already sounds like it will be an appropriately odd venture for the director and A24, who have more than leaned into the weirder side of filmmaking.
Cosmatos will partner on Nekrokosm with Counterpart staff writer Maegan Houang, who will pen the script based on a story conceived of by both filmmakers. No other details for the sci-fi/fantasy/horror film are available yet but will surely emerge as the production gets underway. Until then, Cosmatos makes his debut on the small screen as an episode director on Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities, a new horror anthology series. Meanwhile, A24 is only growing more established in the Hollywood box office landscape, having just released Ti West's X, and is set to release Everything Everywhere All At Once, Men, and several other films this year. Look out for more information about Nekrokosm as it develops.
