Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Music Video Features Kid Cudi Fighting Robotnik

0

Singer Kid Cudi fights Dr. Robotnik in his new music video for Sonic the Hedgehog 2Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the sequel to 2020's successful adaptation of the original SEGA game of the same name. The film, once again helmed by Jeff Fowler, will pick up where the last movie left off, telling the tale of Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) returning to earth with a new ally, Knuckles (Idris Elba), who Sonic (Ben Schwartz) must now contend with. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will also star James Marsden and is set to be released on April 8.

Naturally, ahead of the premiere of the movie, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has been releasing quite a bit of advertising. The marketing has been far-reaching and referential to other pop culture moments, including a Batman-themed poster which was released just ahead of The Batman, as well as several trailers. Of course, much of the promotional material focuses on showing audiences the fan-favorite character Knuckles. While this makes sense as it is what makes the movie different from its predecessor, one does wonder if this is also in an attempt to not repeat the fiasco of the first Sonic the Hedgehog film. As many may remember, upon the first released images of Sonic, fans rallied to have the character design completely altered, resulting in the movie release date being pushed back in order to satisfy audiences.

The newest piece of promotional material for Sonic is a newly released music video for Kid Cudi's song "Stars In The Sky," written for the film. In the video, Cudi himself actually gets involved in the plot of the movie. The clip begins with the singer in his recording studio recording the song when he gets a text from Robotnik asking Kid Cudi to join him. Outside the studio, Kid Cudi finds a small transportation device, and when he gets in, the singer is transformed into an 8-bit version of himself, very similar to those in the original Sonic games. At first, Kid Cudi chases Sonic and his friends. However, he is double-crossed by Dr. Robotnik and eventually helps Sonic to defeat him. See the full video below:

While it is certainly fun to see Kid Cudi team up with Sonic, and the 8-bit style is definitely a clever call back to the origins of the Sonic story, one does have to wonder if the video is giving too much away about the plot. While Knuckles' first appears in this film as an antagonist, it is widely known that Knuckles is an ally of Sonic's, meaning they will almost certainly have to team up by the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 2As the plot of Kid Cudi's music video also follows an enemies-to-friends plot, one does wonder if the video is simply the plot of the film with the singer replacing Knuckles.

Only time will tell if the video has perhaps given away too much. It has already been revealed that the team will be looking for a special emerald in the new film, and that is exactly what Kid Cudi finds in the video, so it does at least follow some of the movie's beats. Despite this, the music video is certainly a fun romp and gives a good glimpse into what audiences can expect from the film, as it is intercut with actual scenes from the movie. If audiences enjoy the premise of Kid Cudi's music video, then it's very likely going to enjoy Sonic the Hedgehog 2 when it is released next month.
