Guiseley V Chester FC - Match Thread #51 - Vanarama National League No
Our last match was on Tuesday as we drew 3-3 away against Gloucester City in what was a relentless encounter. The first-half was magnificent from us as we dominated the entire 45 minutes by playing some wonderful football on the artificial pitch. After just four minutes Marcus Dackers kept up his blistering form to make it 0-1 to us by rifling home. We were in front for less than 10 minutes though, because Fabien Robert blasted in at the far end for Gloucester City to make it 1-1. Five minutes later Declan Weeks put us back in front to make it 1-2 by finishing off a great move to fire in. Things got better for both us and Marcus Dackers, as halfway through the half he dinked in from close range to make it 1-3 to us. Gloucester City almost halved the deficit a few moments later courtesy of Mike Green who headed against the crossbar. We held on to take a healthy lead into the half-time interval. Meanwhile, our showing in the second-period was a shadow of the first-half, as we sat back for pretty much the whole half to invite pressure. Inside the final 10 minutes Gloucester City pulled a goal back to make it 2-3, as Lucas Tomlinson managed to convert. Two minutes later Gloucester City almost added another courtesy of Jordon Thompson who hit the crossbar. Gloucester City did manage to finally equalise deep into injury time, as Matt McClure found the net to complete the comeback. A really tough one to take because despite leading for the majority of the game, we could only head back up to Cheshire with just the point.
Guiseley are having a dreadful season as relegation to Step 3 could be a real possibility for the Yorkshire outfit. The Lions have spent the majority of the campaign in the lower reaches of mid-table, however they are hitting a bad run of form just at the wrong time because for the first time this season, they dropped into the relegation zone on Tuesday night after they were held by fellow strugglers in AFC Telford United at home. Not to mention that Guiseley have four away games to follow after this clash, so unless their fortunes change then I do fear for them. We could be up against four former Seals today, who are Marcus Bignot, Ethan Cartwright, John Johnston, and Shaun Tuton. Firstly, co-manager Marcus makes up half of Guiseley’s management team alongside Russ O’Neill, who was appointed as our manager in September 2017. I thought he was dealt a bad hand given he inherited Jon McCarthy’s mess while he had to manage us in the middle of a financial crisis, but despite his best efforts he was sacked in April 2018 less than 24 hours after our 3-2 win over Bromley. Just a month later, in May 2018, Marcus was appointed as Guiseley’s co-manager which is where he has been at ever since. Centre midfielder Ethan joined us in September 2020 after impressing on trial, but despite his best efforts he failed to make an appearance in the league for us. In October 2020 he joined City Of Liverpool on a dual-registration, while last March Ethan joined Cefn Druids on loan until last April. I have no idea when he left us as we never announced anything, however Ethan signed for Guiseley today which is where he has been at ever since. Left winger John signed for us in January 2020 from Altrincham where he was very hit and miss for us. Last October he joined Kidsgrove Athletic before moving to Guiseley in March of this year, which is where he has been at ever since. Lastly, striker Shaun signed for us in August 2018 having impressed on trial during pre-season. However, later on in August 2018, just one week into the season, he sensationally departed us to join Spennymoor Town who we played on the opening day. Last October he signed for Guiseley from Alfreton Town, which is where he has been at ever since.
We have a gruelling April coming up after today’s game, thus it is vital we record maximum points over in Yorkshire to bolster our position. We have played well recently so I am confident we will claim all three points, while especially given some of our loan signings in Marcus Dackers and Matt Sargent have been impressive then it does give us hope. I imagine it will be a real battle out there as Guiseley always have plenty of giants in their side ????, while the pitch at Nethermoor Park is not the largest so we may have to alter our game plan slightly. Come On City ????⚪️????⚪️!
