In 2019, Cosmopolitan reported on David and Gail Carter writing that David is a sales manager at a forklift company.

Gail works as a staging professional for real estate agents designing and staging the interiors of properties on the market.

Prior to the death of Michelle’s ex-boyfriend, they were “fairly normal suburban parents.“

In 2015 in a public statement, the couple commented on their daughter and her connection to the death of Conrad.

“Our hearts have and remain broken for the Roy family,” the parents said at the time.

“For everyone that does not know our daughter, she is not the villain the media is portraying her to be. She is a quiet, kind, and sympathetic young girl. She tried immensely to help Mr. Roy in his battle with depression. We know that once all of the facts are released, our daughter will be found innocent.”

Cosmopolitan also reported that once she was found guilty her father pleaded for her innocence.

“I pray to God you will take into consideration that Michelle was a troubled, vulnerable teenager in an extremely difficult situation and made a tragic mistake. I am 100 percent sure she was only trying to do what in her mind was right for Conrad.”

What was Michelle Carter charged with?

In 2014 Michelle was accused of helping Conrad commit suicide over text messages, which ultimately led to her placement behind bars.

Yahoo reports that she was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in February 2015, for encouraging her then-boyfriend to commit suicide at age 18 on July 12, 2014.

In January 2020, Carter was released on good behavior and put on probation which is set to end in 2022.

During the investigation, authorities found messages on Conrad’s phone from Michelle that read, “You keep pushing it off and say you’ll do it but you never do. It’s always gonna be that way if you don’t take action,” and “You just need to do it.”

The case of Michelle Carter has been the subject for multiple small screen productions.

In 2019 HBO released the documentary film titled I Love You, Now Die.

Later in 2021, her story was then told again in Investigation Discovery’s Michelle Carter: Love, Texts & Death, which is available to stream on Discovery+.

Now Hulu has released a scripted drama series titled The Girl From Plainville.

The Girl From Plainville stars Elle Fanning portraying Michelle Carter.
