Moon Knight Creator's Cult Classic Comic, Aztec Ace, Will Be Reprinted
In the 1980s, the creator of Moon Knight had other major comics, including Aztec Ace. Dark Horse Comics has announced that this cult classic series by Doug Moench will be released in a new collection. Fans of the Marvel and DC writer should definitely check it out.
Aztec Ace began publishing in 1984. It was written by Doug Moench with art from Dan Day, Philip DeWalt, Mike Gustovich, Ron Harries, Steve Oliff, Sam Parsons, Nestor Redondo, Carrie Spiegle, and Tom Yeates. The series spanned fifteen issues, which were released by Eclipse Comics. This comic company was founded in 1977 but unfortunately closed in 1994. Intellectual property rights were then purchased by Todd McFarlane, creator of Spawn. Now, Aztec Ace is making a comeback thanks to Dark Horse Comics. The series is a cult classic time-travel adventure coming together in a volume that spans more than five hundred pages.
This summer, Dark Horse Comics will be publishing Aztec Ace: The Complete Collection. It will collect all fifteen issues, a bonus short story, and new artwork. The short story has the creative team of Doug Moench and Tim Sale. New artwork is being provided by ChrisCross, Dan Day, Paul Gulacy, Ron Harris, Jok, Kelley Jones, Michael Wm Kaluta, Matt Kindt, Jeff Lemire, Michael Avon Oeming, Paul Pope, Bill Sienkiewicz, Joe Staton, and other comic artists not yet revealed.
First published by Eclipse Comics in 1984, Aztec Ace is an action-packed, intellectual, time-travel adventure starring Caza (AKA Ace) as he travels between the Aztec Empire and his home in the 23rd century. Ace, along with his pupil Bridget Chronopolis and his navigator Head (the floating disembodied head of Sigmund Freud), struggles to save his dimension from time paradoxes created by his enemy, the mysterious Nine-Crocodile.
Doug Moench is well-known for his wide body of work, including the creation of Moon Knight, who will soon debut in his titular Disney+ Marvel series. He wrote numerous Batman comics, including a few Elseworlds stories. These include Batman: Book of the Dead, Batman: Brotherhood of the Bat, Batman: Dark Joker: The Wild, Batman & Dracula: Red Rain (and its sequels), and Batman: Haunted Gotham. He also wrote numerous Marvel Comics, include Planet of the Apes, Godzilla, Inhumans, Thor, and various horror titles such as Tales of the Zombie, Vampire Tales, and Werewolf by Night. He is a creator whose distinct voice has undoubtedly left his mark on not just Marvel Comics, but the industry as a whole.
Aztec Ace ran from 1984 to 1985 and ended before the series had been completely resolved. It featured numerous historical figures and elements. It should be fun for new audiences and fans of the series' original run to be able to revisit this wild series that mixes action and history. Moon Knight creator Doug Moench's Aztec Ace: The Complete Collection is a hardcover volume that releases July 20th in comic shops and August 2 in bookstores.
