Drew Avans’ grand slam powers Dodgers to win over A’s

THE GAME: Drew Avans’ grand slam in the seventh inning lifted the Dodgers to a 6-4 victory over the Oakland A’s on Tuesday night at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Ariz.

PITCHING REPORT: Right-hander Tony Gonsolin faced 14 batters in his second start of the spring and gave up hits to seven of them (five singles, two doubles). Gonsolin was charged with four runs in 2-2/3 innings. … Justin Bruihl followed Gonsolin, hit a batter, walked a batter, gave up a single and a sacrifice fly before getting the final out of the third inning. … Tyler Anderson threw four scoreless innings.

HITTING REPORT: Trea Turner singled to start the first inning for the Dodgers. The next nine consecutive batters were retired by Oakland starter Sean Manaea (four on strikeouts) before Freddie Freeman led off the fourth inning with a single. … Manaea struck out seven and allowed just those two hits in 5-2/3 innings. … The Dodgers scored all of their runs after Manaea left the game. Edwin Rios hit a two-run home run off A’s reliever Sam Moll. Rios leads the Dodgers with three homers this spring. Avans hit his grand slam off former Dodger prospect Grant Holmes. … Cody Bellinger struck out in both of his at-bats. He now has three hits and 17 strikeouts in 24 at-bats this spring.

DEFENSE REPORT: Freeman made a sprawling stop on a ground ball down the first-base line by Dalton Kelly in the first inning then fed Gonsolin at first base to end the inning. … Kevin Pillar made the best play of the game on a slicing drive to right field in the fifth inning. Pillar made a diving catch near the foul line.
