VOTE: Southern California Girls Athlete of the Week, April 1

Each week, publications from the Southern California News Group’s 11 properties (Orange County Register, L.A. Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select the Athletes of the Week for their respective region.

Each athlete is then entered into the overall Southern California Athlete of the Week vote.

Click on the newspaper links below the athlete’s name to read about their performance from last week, and then vote for who you think deserves the top honor.

Readers are allowed to vote multiple times. Voting ends at midnight, but final totals aren’t always immediately reflected due to processing.

Morgan Howey, Arcadia: Howey is one of the best hitters in the area, and the senior showed it in a Pacific League showdown with Crescenta Valley last week. The Oregon State signee went 3 for 4 with a double, home run and two RBIs in the Apaches’ 8-5 victory over the Falcons. The win improved their record to 12-1 overall and 5-0 in league. Howey is batting .711 with eight doubles, three homers, 17 RBIs and 31 runs scored.

Lilly Ramirez-Johnson, West Torrance: Ramirez-Johnson went nine innings to get the win last week in a 5-4 win over South Torrance. She allowed four runs on six hits and struck out eight. She also had two hits and drove in the tying run in the ninth inning.

Caylea Rains-Campbell, Murrieta Mesa: Rains-Campbell tossed a pair of shutouts as the Rams swept two games against Great Oak to remain in a tie for first place in the Southwestern League. Rains-Campbell scattered seven hits and struck out six batters in a 1-0 victory over the Wolfpack. She came back two days later and threw a five-hitter with five strikeouts in a 4-0 win. Rains-Campbell is 14-4 with a 1.97 ERA in the circle this season, but she is 8-1 with a 1.07 ERA over her last 10 appearances.

Caroline Hawkes, San Clemente: Hawkes was named girls sprint MVP at the Orange County Championships after winning the 200- and 400-meter races. Her time of 55.23 seconds in the 400 is the best time in Orange County this season. Hawkes was also victorious in the 200 with a wind-aided. 24.75. She is the season’s county leader in the 200 (wind-legal) at 25.20 and in the 100 at 12.16.

Leah Pettway, Wilson: Pettway went 3 for 3, including an RBI double in the first inning, against Long Beach Poly senior Isabella Alonso, one of the Moore League’s top softball pitchers. Pettway had three of her team’s five hits and showed poise and leadership in her team’s 3-1 loss against Poly on March 24. She is batting above .500 this season.
