The move up to GT4 America comes following a great deal of promise shown by the first-year team and their rookie driver Surgent in last year’s all-Bronze GT America series. Surgent nearly won in Circuit of the Americas before his car stopped on the final lap while leading, and his battle for the win at the Nashville Street Circuit ended when he hit a wall while running second.
“I have been graced with the privilege of piloting the supreme GT4 car, co-driven by the greatest pro in the series, supported by the premier manufacturer, and further supported by our exceptional crew. I will give it my all to ensure that we best position ourselves for a championship,” said Surgent, a native of Dallas, Texas.
O’Brien, 27, first joined forces with McLaren in 2018. After two seasons in the British GT Championship’s GT4 class, O’Brien got his first crack at GT3 competition, pairing up with virtual-to-real world racer James Baldwin at Jenson Team Rocket RJN. In their first start at Oulton Park, O’Brien and Baldwin won on debut, and went on to finish fourth in the GT3 drivers’ championship. Last season, O’Brien raced in the British GT Cup series, taking five class wins in twelve starts.
“It’s a real privilege to be joining Privé Motorsports and Topp Racing working with them to reach our goals of winning races and ultimately the championship this season. Preparations are well underway and we’re working in a good direction having just concluded our first test at COTA”, said O’Brien.
“It will be my first season racing in America and with a list of iconic tracks to come, there’s plenty to look forward to. Together with the brilliant support from McLaren and the capabilities of the 570S GT4, we’re confident we can complete our goals. I’m excited to get the season underway and get stuck in!”
