Superman & Lois Season 2 Star Explains How Jordan's Powers Change Him
Superman & Lois star Alex Garfin speaks out about his character, Jordan Kent, and how his having powers has ultimately affected his growth through seasons 1 & 2. Premiering in February 2021 as a spinoff of Supergirl and taking place in the Arrowverse with the rest of The CW's impressive superhero lineup, the series has received critical acclaim from fans and critics alike. It has been noted for its cinematic appeal, appearing much different from the cinematography and storytelling seen in other The CW shows.
Superman & Lois follows the iconic DC hero later on in his career, after he settles down with his sweetheart, Lois Lane, and has two boys - one of which begins to show signs of similar powers to that of his father. Joining Garfin in the Superman & Lois cast are Tyler Hoechlin and Bitsie Tulloch as series leads Clark Kent and Lois Lane, Jordan Elsass as their other son, Jonathan Kent, Emmanuelle Chriqui as Lana Lang Cushing, Erik Valdez as Kyle Cushing, and Inde Navarrette as Sarah Cushing. In season 1, Jordan's powers surfacing was at the forefront, and season 2 has only begun to showcase just how much he has changed from who he was.
In a tell-all cast interview with EW, Garfin is asked about how Jordan would finally come into his own with his powers and embrace being different, since he struggled so heavily in Superman & Lois season 1. The actor explains that the character may feel some kind of pressure while embracing these abilities, feeling as though he should be helping people with them, since no one else is likely to stand up to evil. Throughout the rest of the interview, he speaks about his favorite episodes still to come in season 2 and other storylines he would like to see. Read the actor's words below:
Jordan begins to find himself under pressure. He begins to find himself in a place of, "If I don't do it, no one will do it." It affects his mental stress, because all of a sudden he [has] this responsibility. It's that deadline syndrome, isn't it? When you have something to do by a deadline, you get it done, even if you can't imagine yourself doing it in double the time, when you have a deadline, you usually get it done. That affects him mentally. That affects his mental strength, and it affects his acuity even. And you also see it start to negatively affect him. You see it maybe start to bubble over in different ways throughout the episode.
In contrast to Jordan inheriting his father's extraordinary abilities, his brother Jonathan, who possesses these powers in the comics and eventually becomes the next Superman, has no such powers thus far. Superman & Lois season 2 began with an interesting storyline of him seemingly developing powers of his own, though only through the consumption of X-Kryptonite, which was used to bring Kryptonians back to life in season 1. He did eventually stop taking these, losing his powers, and chose to protect others with the skills he already has, possibly closing the door on him developing powers in the future.
With this interesting take on the character's upcoming journey directly from the actor, audiences can rest assured that this fan favorite will finally become comfortable in his own skin and develop even further within the show. Also, with the character's previous representation of social anxiety in the show, this storyline is sure to put a similar level of representation as the series continues. Either way, fans will have to wait as Superman & Lois season 2 continues.
