The 5 Smartest Live-Action Batman Movie Villains (& 5 Who Are Not So Smart)

0

Batman's movies are defined by the villains that appear in them. A weak villain for a Batman movie is a death sentence. The most dangerous foes of Batman have always been those who can outwit Batman at every turn. Of course, not every villain is capable of doing that.

While some of Batman's greatest adversaries have complex plans and manipulations in the works, some are content to just start flailing in the general direction of the caped crusader and hope for the best.

The first real adversary of Nolan's Batman, and a sharp one to boot. Cillian Murphy's portrayal of Scarecrow is equal parts cunning and terrifying. His soft-spoken demeanor as Jonathan Crane contrasts with his sociopathic behavior as Scarecrow.

In both the film and the novelization, the Scarecrow, despite being a "pawn' to Ra's Al Ghul's plans, always had his interests in mind. Not to mention, the guy made fear juice in his spare time, alongside being a licensed medical professional.

The man who started the trend of Batman villains playing with funny evil chemicals, Jack Nicholson's Joker is a wickedly cunning man whose intelligence is only rivaled by his ruthlessness, and he uses it to great effect against Gotham City. Not to mention, Nicholson starts the trend of Joker having some incredible quotes.

Despite seemingly just being a "two-bit thug", he managed to develop one of the most dangerous chemical weapons in Batman's history, the laughing gas. Add to that his complex but surprisingly effective plans, Nicholson's Joker set the groundwork for all future cinematic Jokers to come.

Liam Neeson portrays Ra's Al-Ghul as a criminal mastermind, whose blades are just as sharp as his mind. Under the guise of a wealthy businessman, Ra's Al-Ghul amassed both wealth, goodwill and under the shadows, an army of loyal assassins to do his bidding.

His plans are the very reason that Gotham city is the way it is, and by extension, why Bruce Wayne's parents died. All the crime was solely to destabilize the city for his grand plan of reconstruction. Plus, he's the guy who trained Batman, and that's nothing to scoff at.

Without a doubt the biggest singular threat in the Nolan trilogy, the Joker was a man who came out of nowhere and shook Gotham to its very core. The Joker makes his intentions very clear to the people of Gotham, and yet he outsmarts their greatest protectors at every turn. Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Clown Prince of Crime is still considered by many to be the perfect live-action Joker.

A man whose plans are unintelligible to anyone but himself, and whose cruelty is something he deeply revels in. His self-characterization of  "being a dog who cases cars" is just another facet of his manipulations. Although he sows chaos, his plans are anything but. Methodical in execution, yet chaotic in the aftermath, the Joker is living proof that the best way to hurt Batman isn't by attacking Batman. It's by attacking the spirit of Gotham itself, as seen by his corruption of Harvey Dent.

The Riddler in The Batman (2022) is the first villain, out of any movie villain, to truly test Batman's title of "World's Greatest Detective", a title that Batman hasn't quite gotten yet at this point in his career. It often bears mentioning, but most of Batman's villains are geniuses in one way or another. The Riddler is usually the go-to villain for the more mystery-focused Batman stories for that reason.

Paul Dano's Riddler is an incredibly dark version of the character who perfectly represents the Riddler's vast intelligence, incessant neuroticism, and utter cruelty to those he feels are beneath him. The movie's further exploration of his character also reveals how deeply the corruption of Gotham truly runs. Without a doubt, the most intelligent Batman villain we have ever seen on the theatrical screen, and it will be interesting to see where the character goes from here on out.

Someone had to be the padding for Batman to beat up before the big bad, and unfortunately, it's these thugs' job to fill the role. When we see the Maronis or the Falcones or the Russians, they are always in hiding from Batman.

It's not just Batman foiling their plans either. The fact that one of their banks was robbed by the Joker in broad daylight with hundreds of witnesses shows how cocky the criminals of Gotham city have gotten with their power. They exist purely to show how inconsequential they are when faced with titans like Joker or Batman.

Aaron Eckhart's version of Harvey Dent was a charismatic, incredibly brave, and morally upstanding defense attorney who was a symbol of Gotham's capacity for real good. Two-Face, the man he became, was an emotionally unstable psychopath with a short fuse. Two-Face kills the people responsible for his fiance's death, not for justice, but vengeance.

Harvey Dent's lack of wisdom isn't because he lacks academic knowledge or common sense. It's exactly because he has both those qualities, and chooses to ignore them in favor of his vengeance, that speaks to Dent's unstable nature. The fact alone that he believes the Joker's insane philosophy, grieving or not, shows how easy he is to manipulate towards sinister goals.

His teeth may be sharp, but his mind certainly isn't. Left to rot underneath a sewer and raised by god-knows-what, the Penguin is more animal than he is a man. Despite the adorable name, Danny DeVito's portrayal is anything but cuddly to anybody who stands in his way. That's not even mentioning the fact that he may or may not eat children. Allegedly.

Driven by rage and hatred for the world, The Penguin is proof that a man doesn't need to be the smartest tool in the shed to be a thorn in Batman's side. Still, this animalistic hatred makes DeVito's Penguin one of the best portrayals of the character. While he is capable of cunning, it's always overshadowed by the seething spite and narcissism, which ultimately lands him in hot water. Or more accurately, toxic waste.

Tommy Lee Jones' portrayal of the double-sided defense attorney is telling of the disease that infests the Burtoverse's portrayal of its villains. Although they are all entertaining in some capacity, one can't help but feel that every single villain after Joker is just trying to be a zanier version of the Joker with their gimmick. It robs the characters of being unique in their own right.

Two-Face in Batman Forever is just bereft of any personal drive. His motivations are basically whatever he thinks is funny at the time, and unlike the Joker, he lacks the intelligence to make any of his plans work. Two-Face relies solely on the Riddler and just kinda tags along for the whole movie. His defeat turning out to be as simple as throwing a lot of coins in the air when he makes a decision just seals the deal.

This picture was picked for the sole purpose of expressing this point. Batman Forever's Bane is stupid. If there was a picture for the definition of dumb muscle in the dictionary of slang,  this Bane wouldn't even be on the page, because he would be too illiterate to realize where "dumb muscle" is on the dictionary. In a movie as dumb as Batman & Robin, it takes a special level of dumb to stand out.

Relegating the famously intelligent Bane, a character who just three years ago was the focus of the very successful and beloved Knightfall storyline, into the role of a brutish thug is just insulting to the character. Despite all this, it's hard to hate this portrayal now that audiences have gotten so many good portrayals of Bane since then. As long as fans are willing to look at Batman & Robin for the campy, weirdly sexual, and borderline experimental fever dream that it is, this braindead Bane could provide some hilarity.
