Barry Season 4 Already In Development, Bill Hader To Direct All Episodes
Barry season 4 is already in development ahead of season 3's premiere, with Bill Hader set to direct all episodes. HBO's dark comedy series stars the Saturday Night Live alum as the titular Barry Berkman, a dispirited marine-turned-hitman who travels from Cleveland to Los Angeles for a job and finds himself reinvigorated by the city's theater scene. Barry stumbles into an acting class taught by Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler) who takes him under his wing.
In the class, Barry also meets an aspiring actress named Sally Reed (Sarah Goldberg), with whom he develops a romantic interest in. After being inspired to pursue a career in acting, Barry struggles to cut ties with his criminal associates, Monroe Fuches (Stephen Root) and NoHo Hank (Anthony Carrigan). Since its premiere in 2018, Barry has been showered with a total of 30 Emmy nominations. Its shocking season 2 cliffhanger left audiences craving for more and they have been waiting nearly three years to see what happens next. Earlier this year, it was finally announced that Barry season 3 will premiere on April 24.
Now, a profile by THR reveals that Barry season 4 "is already outlined and being written" and additionally, Hader "plans to direct every one," even though HBO hasn't officially renewed the series. Hader's plans are quite notable since the star directed the first three episodes of season 1, two for season 2, and five for the upcoming season 3. However, Hader has yet to direct all eight episodes for an entire season.
The fact that Barry season 4 is already in development shouldn't be much of a surprise to diehard fans. Hader hinted at such last year, saying that Barry season 4 was completely mapped out. In fact, Hader and his writer's room were then able to go back and tweak season 3's scripts before they started filming to provide a better setup for the fourth season. Of course, this was only possible due to the extra time awarded to them by the COVID-19 pandemic which delayed filming for Barry season 3.
Barry is the only directorial credit Hader has to his name, though he has clearly developed an affinity for the craft over the course of making the show. In fact, considering his ambitious plans to direct every episode of season 4, it appears the actor enjoys being behind the camera just as much as being in front of it. Barry has already netted Hader two Emmy nods for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series, and more are likely to come over the next two seasons.
