Ezra Miller Hit With Restraining Order Due To Post-Arrest Incident
The current controversy around actor Ezra Miller is only getting more complicated as The Flash star is hit with a restraining order following their arrest in Hawaii. Following breakout roles in films like The Perks of Being a Wallflower and We Need to Talk About Kevin, Miller reached international stardom with a pair of buzzy roles in two major Warner Bros. franchises. First, Miller was cast as Barry Allen, aka the Flash, in the DCEU; they are set to finally star in their own solo movie next year. Then, Miller boarded WB's Fantastic Beasts series in the key role of Credence Barebone.
Right now, the conversation around Miller should be regarding next month's Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. However, the actor has instead stirred up headlines after being arrested this past weekend in Hawaii. Miller was arrested for disorderly conduct and harassment while at a karaoke bar; they later posted bail. Miller's representatives have yet to make a statement, but there is evidently more to the story beyond the arrest.
According to court documents obtained by Radar, an unnamed couple has filed for a restraining order against Miller after the actor threatened and stole from them. Miller had been staying with this couple in Hawaii, and after being released from police custody following the karaoke incident, Miller burst into the couple's bedroom and "threatened [husband] saying "I will bury you and your s--- wife." The report then states that Miller stole many things from the couple, including a passport and wallet, which included credit cards and a Social Security card. As of this time, the couple has yet to recover these items. The restraining order aims to prevent Miller from contacting the couple in any way, particularly due to concern that their fame would allow them easy access to weapons.
This is not the first time Miller has been the subject of controversy. In 2020, a video emerged that appeared to show Miller choking a female fan. According to those allegedly present for the altercation, the fan jokingly goaded Miller into a fight, but the actor took things too far. They put their hand on the fan's neck and dragged her to the ground. At the time, there wasn't an investigation.
The timing of Miller's latest troubles is likely a bit concerning for the executives at Warner Bros. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is just a few weeks away from release, and the franchise is already battling a fair amount of controversies. In addition to issues stemming from author J.K Rowling's anti-trans comments, Warner Bros. has fielded criticism for firing Johnny Depp from the franchise and replacing him with Mads Mikkelsen following Depp's legal troubles with ex-wife Amber Heard. It isn't yet clear how WB plans to tackle the Miller situation, and the actor's reps haven't made any kind of statement. Nevertheless, this doesn't seem to be going away any time soon, and many will want some kind of explanation for their behavior.
