- PlayStation Plus is a subscription service that gives gamers access to online play and other benefits.
- Sony recently announced new tiered PlayStation Plus plans: Essential, Extra, and Premium.
- PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium will include hundreds of games and the option to stream on console or PC.
For more than a decade, Sony's PlayStation Plus subscription service has provided PlayStation console owners with essential online services, like multiplayer, cloud save storage, and free downloadable games.
In June, Sony will expand the existing service with the launch of new PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium plans that offer hundreds of classic PlayStation games for download, as well as a streaming library of games for players on both Windows computers and PlayStation consoles.
The current PlayStation Plus plan will become PlayStation Plus Essential and keep the same price point. Extra and Premium will charge players more for access to a huge catalog with hundreds of games. Extra subscribers can download recent PlayStation 4 and PS5 games to their consoles, while Premium subscribers will get even more titles and the option to stream games.
The new PlayStation Plus plans are comparable to Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass, a service that has amassed more than 25 million subscribers and is often compared to Netflix for its large library and streaming option. Nintendo recently updated the Nintendo Switch Online service to include dozens more classic games for subscribers too.
What is PlayStation Plus?
PlayStation Plus is a gaming subscription service that launched in 2010; it's required to play most multiplayer games online on PS5 and PS4 consoles and to keep your game save data backed up in the PlayStation cloud.
PlayStation Plus members also get access to free games every month that they can keep for as long as they're a member. Sony gives discounts and special offers to PlayStation Plus members in the PlayStation digital store as well.
The existing service will be expanding in June with new Extra and Premium plans that give subscribers even more features, including the ability to access hundreds of PlayStation games.
How much is PlayStation Plus?
In its current form, PlayStation Plus costs $10 a month, $25 for three months, or $60 per year. Occasionally you can purchase a one-year membership for $40 or $45 through the PlayStation store or other retailers.
In June, Sony will revamp the service with new plans and features. Players who pay for the current PlayStation Plus membership will be transitioned to PlayStation Plus Essential ($10/month), which will provide the same features with a new name that reflects the basic PlayStation Plus package.
At that same time, the company will launch Extra ($15/month) and Premium ($18/month) plans with additional features.

Sony plans to start offering new tiers of its PlayStation Plus service in June. These plans are called PlayStation Plus Extra and PlayStation Plus Premium.

PlayStation Plus Extra will offer up to 400 downloadable games for PS4 and PS5 along with the core services of PlayStation Plus like online multiplayer, cloud saving, free games every month, and discounts on digital releases. It's priced at $15 a month, $40 for three months, or $100 per year.
PlayStation Plus Premium will provide more than 300 classic games from the original PlayStation, PS2, and PlayStation Portable along with more than 400 games for PS4 and PS5. PlayStation Plus Premium members will also be able to stream the library of games on PlayStation consoles and PC. PlayStation Plus premium will cost $18 a month, $50 for three months, or $120 per year.
Sony currently offers streaming in select markets including the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Sweden.
Sony will offer a slightly discounted version of PlayStation Plus Premium where streaming is not available to give those players access to the PS1, PS2, and PSP catalog. It will be called PlayStation Plus Deluxe, and pricing will vary based on location.
What games will be included with new PlayStation Plus plans?
Sony hasn't announced a full list of games for its PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium plans yet, but the company says it plans to include titles like Death Stranding, God of War, Marvel's Spider-Man, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Mortal Kombat 11, and Returnal at launch.
What do the new PlayStation Plus plans mean for PlayStation Now?
The new PlayStation Plus plans will bring about the end of PlayStation Now, Sony's current video game streaming service that runs on PlayStation consoles and computers. PlayStation Now features will be offered as part of PlayStation Plus Premium instead.
PlayStation Now subscribers will be transitioned to PlayStation Plus Premium, and can expect the full PlayStation Now catalog to still be available.
What happens if I'm a current PlayStation Plus or PlayStation Now subscriber?
Current PlayStation Plus subscribers will be automatically transitioned to the PlayStation Plus Essential plan when it launches in June. Those who subscribe to PlayStation Now, Sony's current video game streaming service, will be transitioned to PlayStation Plus Premium at no extra charge.
Notably, PlayStation Now currently costs $10 a month, which is significantly cheaper than the $18 a month cost of PlayStation Plus Premium. It's not clear how long migrated PlayStation Now members will continue to pay the lower rate.
We'll update this post as we receive more details about Sony's plan to launch PlayStation Plus Extra and PlayStation Plus Premium in June. The company says the new plans will be available in Asia before rolling out to North America and Europe. More streaming markets could be introduced in the second half of 2022 as well.
