All-Bay Area News Group girls basketball, 2022: Meet the team

Player of the year

Elle Ladine, Pinewood, 5-11, senior

Washington-bound star received most valuable player honors in the West Bay Athletic League’s Foothill Division while propelling Pinewood to a 22-3 season. Led the Los Altos Hills school to the Central Coast Section Open Division final and a spot in the CIF NorCal Open Division regional. Only Pinewood player to average double figures in scoring. Her season averages: 23.4 points, 14.7 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 2.2 steals per game. Full story here.

First team

Makiah Asidanya, Salesian, 5-7, junior

Tri-County Athletic League Rock Division most valuable player. Helped lead the Richmond school to the CIF Division I state championship. On a team with balanced scoring, she led the way with 10.4 points per game. Also averaged 3.3 rebounds and 2.4 steals.

Jael Butler, Valley Christian, 6-2, senior

First-team honors in the West Catholic Athletic League. Helped lead Valley to Central Coast Section Open Division playoffs and NorCal Division I regional. Averaged 17.5 points and 11.4 rebounds per game for a team that finished 21-8. Committed to Morgan State.

Morgan Cheli, Archbishop Mitty, 6-2, sophomore

West Catholic Athletic League player of the year led Mitty to league, section and regional championships. Recently received an offer from Stanford. Averaged a team-leading 14.8 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.3 steals and 3.1 assists per game for a team that reached the CIF Open Division state final and finished 30-2.

Talana Lepolo, Carondelet, 5-6, senior

East Bay Athletic League’s co-player of the year led the Concord school to the North Coast Section Open Division championship and a runner-up finish in the NorCal Open Division regional. The Stanford-bound point guard averaged 15.0 points, 8.6 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 4.5 steals per game.

Amanda Muse, Heritage, 6-3, junior

Bay Valley Athletic League’s most valuable player has narrowed her list of college choices to Duke, Notre Dame, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA and Washington. Averaged 17.1 points, 10.0 rebounds and 4.2 blocks per game for a team that went 17-8. 

Natalie Pasco, San Ramon Valley, 5-10, senior

Boise State-bound standout finished her high school career with 1,463 points, believed to be a school record, and was named co-player of the year in the East Bay Athletic League. Led the Wolves to runner-up finishes in the league and NCS Open Division playoffs and an invitation to the NorCal Open regional.

Second team

Amaya Bonner, Bishop O’Dowd, 6-1, senior

First-team selection in the West Alameda County Conference Foothill Division. Cal-bound standout led the Dragons to North Coast Section Open Division semifinals, scoring 24 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in a win over Cardinal Newman.

Nya Epps, Carondelet, 5-10, senior

All-East Bay Athletic League first-team recognition. Averaged 14.5 points, four assists and three steals per game as Carondelet went 26-3 and captured league and NCS Open Division championships. 

Silivia Fonongaloa, Salesian, 6-1, senior

Raised her dominance to another level in the Division I state championship game, finishing with 18 points and 11 rebounds in a 62-51 victory over Windward-Los Angeles. Averaged 9.9 points and 5.3 rebounds on the season.

Siena Guttadauro, Archbishop Mitty, 5-6, senior

First-team All-West Catholic Athletic League recognition. Second-leading scorer on a team that won the CCS and NorCal Open Division championships, averaging 10.2 points per game, to go with 3.1 assists and 2.3 steals. Bound for University of Texas at San Antonio.

Sabrina Ma, St. Ignatius, 5-10, senior

San Jose State-bound standout received first-team honors in the West Catholic Athletic League while leading St. Ignatius into the CCS Open Division playoffs and final of the NorCal Division I regional. Scored 23 points in a loss to Salesian in the NorCal final.

Trinity Zamora, Piedmont, 6-0, junior 

Co-player of the year in the West Alameda County Conference’s Foothill Division. Had received recruiting interest from numerous colleges, including Cal, Washington State, Oklahoma State and Kentucky. Averaged 23 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, three steals and three blocks for a team that finished 24-7 and reached the D-II NorCal quarterfinals.

Third team

Melesungu Afeaki, Capuchino, 6-2, senior

University of San Diego-bound standout helped lead the Mustangs to the Central Coast Section Division III championship and the quarterfinals of the CIF NorCal Division III regional. Averaged 18.8 points and 12.5 rebounds per game.  

Noemie Bariteau, Archbishop Mitty, 5-8, senior

Seattle University-bound guard received first-team honors in the West Catholic Athletic League. Averaged 9.3 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game while helping Mitty capture CCS and NorCal Open Division titles.

Jamie Kent, Carondelet, 6-0, junior

Was a significant piece in Carondelet’s run to the East Bay Athletic League and North Coast Section Open Division titles, averaging a double-double for the season – 10.1 and 10.5 rebounds per game.

Valentina Saric, Priory, 6-0, senior

All-West Bay Athletic League Foothill Division first-team pick averaged 18.3 points and 5.8 rebounds for a team that won the Central Coast Section Division V title and reached the semifinals of the NorCal Division III regional. Committed to Morehead State.

Mari Somvichian, Oakland Tech, 5-6, junior

Helped lead the Bulldogs to the Division III state championship, averaging a team-leading 12.5 points per game, to go with 3.5 assists and 2.3 steals. Scored 19 points in a regional win over Priory.

Kelly Tumlin, California, 5-7, senior

First-team selection in the East Bay Athletic League averaged 22.6 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.3 steals per game. Scored 40 points in a win over Foothill and 35 in a win over Arroyo. The only player on her team to average more than 5.6 points per game.

In her 29th season at the San Jose school, Mitty reclaimed the Central Coast Section Open Division championship it lost last spring and went on to beat Carondelet in the NorCal Open Division final. The Monarchs finished 30-2.

Those eligible for All-Bay Area News Group teams come from leagues based predominantly in Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. The Bay Area News Group chooses the team.
