Twitch Streamer Narcissa Unbanned After Threats Of Violence On Twitter
Narcissa Wright, a streamer known for Legend of Zelda speedruns, has had her Twitch account unbanned despite recently threatening violence again the company's headquarters. While initially finding fame by streaming speedruns, in recent years Narcissa has focused more on Super Smash Bros. content. While many Twitch streamers have been banned for behavior on stream, many feel that Narcissa's reaction to a recent ban should result in a more serious punishment.
Throughout the history of the live streaming service, Twitch has banned many streamers for behavior both on and off stream. The platform has been embroiled in an infamous ongoing feud with Dr Disrespect, a beloved streamer who specializes in battle royale shooters. The popular gamer was permanently banned from Twitch back in June 2020, leading Disrespect to transition onto YouTube. ASMR streamer Amouranth was mysteriously banned from Twitch last year, too, while a Counter-Strike: Global Offensive streamer was recently banned for allegedly shaving himself on stream. Chess grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura got a Twitch ban recently, too, after using the platform to stream Dr Disrespect playing chess with fellow streamer Dr Lupo.
Esports commentator and Twitter user Jake Lucky recently revealed that Narcissa Wright will be allowed back on Twitch. The streamer was permanently banned from the platform on March 21, and afterwards she posted a threat on Twitter which read, "I want to kill myself and shoot people at the twitch HQ!" However, despite this direct and serious threat, Twitch has reduced the length of Narcissa's ban to only 22 days. Narcissa herself expresses remorse and gratitude at the unbanning, but Jake Lucky and many of his followers feel that the ban is much too lenient considering the threats made by Narcissa.
Narcissa's unbanning is very controversial, as is the banning of many other high-profile Twitch streamers. Earlier this year Twitch streamer Disguised Toast was banned due to DMCA copyright strikes filed against him. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act makes it illegal to directly distribute copyrighted works without altering them in some way. Streaming gameplay is legal, since the player is directly changing the experience, but streaming films or television does violate the DMCA. Disguised Toast, and fellow streamers like Pokimane, therefore received a wave of bans after sharing films and shows with fans via Twitch.
Narcissa's ban may have been innocent, but the threat made by the streamer following her ban should be treated very seriously. By quickly allowing the streamer back onto the platform, Twitch demonstrates a disregard for these threats or threats made by others. With Jake Lucky spreading awareness about the unban, more attention will hopefully be drawn to the issue in the future.
