Defence company BAE Systems has been awarded a contract to modernize US Navy’s Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Mustin (DDG 89).

The contract, which covers the fiscal year 2022, covers a combination of maintenance, modernization and repair of the vessel. The agreement also includes options that, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value of this contract to $95 million. The current value of the contract is $89 million.

According to the officials, the work will be performed in San Diego, California, and is expected to be completed by November 2023.

The construction of USS Mustin began on 15 January 2001 at  Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Ingalls Shipbuilding shipyard. The vessel was launched on 12 December 2001 and christened on 15 December 2001.

On 26 July 2003, a commissioning ceremony was held at the Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego.

In 2020, USS Mustin conducted a trilateral passage in the Philippine Sea with Australia and Japan’s naval ships.
