Spy Kids Reboot Headed To Netflix From Robert Rodriguez
Netflix is reviving the Spy Kids franchise and bringing back original director Robert Rodriguez. Released in 2001, Spy Kids centered on Carmen and Juni Cortez, who discover their parents are super spies, and after they are captured, they must rescue them. The film was a box-office smash and held the number one spot at the box office for three weeks, and grossed $147.9 million worldwide.
The movie spawned a franchise, with Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams in 2002 and Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over in 2003. The franchise returned in 2011 with Spy Kids: All the Time In The World, focusing on a new cast of characters, yet the film failed to relaunch the series. In 2016, Netflix premiered a computer-animated series titled Spy Kids: Mission Critical, which ran for two seasons until 2018.
Netflix and Rodriguez have found a great working relationship as THR officially confirmed Robert Rodriguez is returning to write and direct a new Spy Kids film for the streaming service. The news comes on the 21st anniversary of the original film's release date of March 30. No details have been given on the plot, but it appears to introduce a new family of spies. No word on if it will be a sequel to the original films and bring the cast back or if it will be a reboot of the franchise.
Rodriguez worked with Netflix on the film We Can Be Heroes, which was connected to Rodriguez's film The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl. Rodriguez is currently developing a sequel to We Can Be Heroes, and with a new Spy Kids film, it appears the director has found a good home at the streamer. Rodriguez is one of many high-profile directors Netflix has begun courting to help boost their catalog, having already secured projects with Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Guillermo Del Toro, to name a few.
While the previous attempt to relaunch Spy Kids may not have worked, twenty years removed from the original film's release date creates a larger gap in anticipation for audiences who have had more time to grow nostalgic for it. Kids who saw the original are now older may have kids of their own they would want to share the experience with. If the film does opt for a legacy sequel approach, bringing back franchise stars Alexa PenaVega, Daryl Sabara, Antonio Banderas, Carla Gugino, Danny Tejo, and more is a sure-fire way to bring the anticipation up for this project.
