Sire Stakes Purses

We Have Good News…
Based on our conversations with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) we believe the 2022 Sire Stakes will have a minimum purse of roughly $65,000 per division.

What’s even better, as the MHHA works with MDARD and the Legislature, we believe not only is this purse structure sustainable for 2023 and beyond but that we expect to grow that purse even higher with a goal of having the 2023 Sire Stakes run for at least $75,000 per division.

While the state’s annual budget won’t be finalized until later this year, we are optimistic about the purse increase and wanted to reach out to our members as there is still some time left in the 2022 breeding season for individuals interested in breeding to a Michigan stallion. We want to remind horsemen that the yearling nominations are due on June 30th, with a late payment option in December. Horsemen can make their yearling nominations by clicking the button below.

The MHHA is also confident that we can replicate the other summer programs that exist for Michigan Sired horses including the Great Lakes Stake, the Spartan Stakes, and the Sire-Only Colt Stakes programs.

The continued inclusions of these programs should offer more opportunities for Michigan-Sired horses to earn purses and help boost payments through Michigan breeders awards for those who continue to breed here in our state.

We also continue to be proud that the growth of these programs for Michigan Sired horses hasn’t stopped us from maintaining the programs for Michigan bred horses like the Mixed-Company Colt Stakes with a new fair final and the Breeders Stakes.
