10 Movies That Need Prequels, According To Reddit | Screen Rant
Prequels have always been a clever way of continuing a series that can't go any further or seems to have come to a natural end. And with an increasing popularity in villain origin stories like Cruella and Joker, they are more common than ever before.
But while Disney has turned it into a regular thing on Disney+ with Star Wars prequels, there are so many other properties that Reddit would love to see get the prequel treatment. Whether it's the origin story of one of the most sadistic villains ever or a prequel literally set billions of years before the original, Redditors have some quirky ideas for prequels, and some of them come with hilarious elevator pitches.
After the polarizing response to The Matrix Resurrections, it's hard to believe that people are already asking for more. However, that's exactly what RandomXTC wants, but they have a fascinating pitch and one that could actually breathe some life into the stale series.
The Redditor wants to see the "meaningless, unfulfilling life of Neo working 9 to 5 in a large software company. It would be a combination of Office Space and Mr. Robot." There are loads of brave franchises that drastically switched genres with their sequels, so there's no reason why the next Matrix movie couldn't be an office-based sci-fi comedy.
One thing that Quentin Tarantino does best is world-building, and that's no more clear than with Kill Bill, which is full of characters with depth, but most of them only have a few minutes of screentime. Of all the characters, Madrascalcutta wants to see a prequel focusing on the sadistic antagonist himself, noting that "Bill's origin story would be fascinating."
There are so many interesting backstories for most of the Kill Bill characters that any one of them could have their own prequel. While Bill's origin story would be great to see, as he'd surely have a Breaking Bad-like story arc, O-Ren Ishii has the most intriguing and most cultured history that would make a great prequel. Not to mention that she has the best one-on-one fight scenes.
The_Iceman2288 wants to see a prequel to The Purge. Though the franchise already switched genres from low-budget horror to action thriller, the Redditor thinks the prequel should be a political drama. The user reckons it should examine how The US government can't agree on anything, yet they can somehow pass a bill where everyone gets to murder each other."
There has already been a prequel to the movie, The First Purge, but it doesn't exactly touch on what the Redditor wants to see. The First Purge had the potential to be profound and tackle these exact subjects, and it could have even been an allegory for the current times, but it missed a golden opportunity.
There are now three Wolverine movies, and only one of them is actually good, as both X-Men Origins: Wolverine and The Wolverine were critically scathed. However, a fourth movie could balance the books, and Lgnxhll thinks it should be a prequel. The Redditor wants to see a "prequel to all existing wolverine movies that show his involvement in the Civil War."
As the mutant has fought in several wars, including the Vietnam War, any one of those settings with Wolverine as the lead character would make for a great war movie. And while Origins is hated even by the fans, it actually has one of the best movie opening sequences ever, and it teases Wolverine in action in the Civil War with Sabertooth.
The most recent detective movie was The Batman, and before that, there hadn't been a great gritty mystery film since 2014's Prisoners. Andre_iC posits that there should be a Prisoners prequel that focuses on Detective Loki. The Redditor explains that it shouldn't be an "origin story, maybe just solving another case that takes place before the events of prisoners."
It'd be great to have a procedural-like detective movie series. And while that's exactly what cinephiles are getting with Knives Out, which is getting to sequels on Netflix, it'd be nice for film buffs to have a darker alternative too, and it isn't too late to do it with Loki.
Leon: The Professional is one of the greatest crime dramas of the 90s, and it's easily the best movie about a sympathetic hitman. However, it isn't Leon that Samurai5625 thinks should be the focal point of the prequel. Instead, the Redditor wants "to see it be about Norman Stansfield (Gary Oldman) and how he got so deranged."
Stansfield is one of the most terrifying movie villains ever and he's capable of even worse things than Leon, so a prequel based on him would undoubtedly be violent and action-packed. But as the movie is nearing 30 years old, there's no way Oldman can play a younger version of the character, so it'd require some expert casting.
Giantg52 wants to see a prequel to the cult classic Drive, stating that "I'm a hardcore fan of this movie and it's by far my favorite film of all time, but I think a prequel could have so much potential." The movie was marketed as an action thriller about a getaway driver, but that wasn't what audiences got, so fans deserve a full-length movie that gives them exactly that, and a prequel could be the way to do it.
As the 2011 movie is based on the novel of the same name, there is a sequel to the novel, so it isn't out of the realm of possibility that more of this world could be adapted, even if it isn't a prequel. The director of the movie, Nicolas Winding Refn, has even stated that "stranger things have happened."
The Truman Show is one of the most creative and most philosophical movies ever made, as it follows a man who has been the star of a reality show his whole life, only he has no idea. Everything around him is completely staged, including his friends and his marriage, and the movie ends with him finding out everything.
Lgnxhll thinks "it would be cool to see the process that led society to the point it is in the movie." While a prequel would be interesting, it'd be even more interesting to see a sequel, as fans could find out how Truman has adapted to real life and how he coped with finding out that his whole life was a complete lie.
There aren't many movies like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and the similar ones aren't anywhere near as good. Of all the movies that mix animation with live-action, they all pale in comparison to the 1988 movie. And that's why TheOnlyBongo wants to see more of it.
The Redditor explains that "it's a world I would love to go back to and explore, with Toons intermixed with the real world." The user also points out that a prequel has even been written. A prequel was developed not long after the success of the original, and it was called Roger Rabbit II: The Toon Platoon, but it was unfortunately canceled after several legal setbacks.
Mad_kap wants to see a prequel to the classic Jurassic Park, which would essentially be the most expensive documentary ever made. The Redditor posits that it should be set "millions of years ago. No people. Just Dinos. and Nicolas Cage narrates."
As the Jurassic World series is coming to an end with Dominion, it's doubtful that the franchise will be shelved for long until it makes a return. But it'll have to do something drastically different, and stripping it down to its core elements and setting it during the prehistoric era could end up being completely original. However, the Cage narration might ruin it.
