Bay Bridge: Suspect stole truck at gunpoint after crashing his own car, CHP says

Authorities were looking for a man who carjacked a driver at gunpoint in Bay Bridge traffic Wednesday after damaging his own car in a separate collision.

No injuries were reported in the collision or the carjacking, according to the California Highway Patrol.

According to social-media posts, the carjacking happened around 11:45 a.m. in eastbound I-80 lanes just west of Treasure Island. The suspect stood in traffic briefly, aiming a gun at a pickup truck, then taking the vehicle from its driver when they slowed and stopped.

The man then drove eastbound toward Oakland in the vehicle, described as a white Chevy Colorado pickup truck with California license plate 95222P2. No one was injured in the carjacking or in the earlier collision, CHP San Francisco bureau Lt. Ross Ingels said.

Officers who responded to the scene learned that moments before the carjacking, the suspect’s Ford Explorer was involved in a two-vehicle collision, Ingels said.

That crash initially blocked multiple lanes for at least an hour, backing up eastbound traffic to Fourth Street, with all lanes cleared shortly before 2 p.m.

The CHP released images of the Chevy and asked anyone who saw the vehicle not to approach it, but instead call 911. The driver should be considered armed and dangerous. Authorities were not able to provide a complete description of the suspect.
