Jordan Poole scores 38 points in Warriors’ loss to Suns

0

SAN FRANCISCO – Jordan Poole ignited the Warriors’ offense and scored a game-high 38 points Wednesday. But when it came down to it, Poole couldn’t be Golden State’s savior in the game’s final seconds.

Poole, who had been huge all game for the Warriors, missed a 3-pointer with about four seconds remaining.

The Warriors lost to the Phoenix Suns 107-103, extending their losing streak to four games.

Before the missed shot, Poole hit four consecutive free throws on two trips to the line in the game’s final minute to give Golden State a one-point lead. But Devin Booker sank back-to-back free throws and Chris Paul made a driving layup to give the Suns the lead, and despite their best efforts the Warriors couldn’t regain control.

Poole, who’s been the Dubs’ best player since Stephen Curry went down with a foot injury earlier this month, recorded his fourth 30-point performance of the season.

The Suns knew defending Poole was going to be a challenge.

“He’s right there with all the top scorers in the league, case in point they’re all hard to stop because they do it in so many ways; at the rim, from midrange, form three, body movement. The tough part about Jordan is he’s learning how to play like Steph,” Suns coach Monty Williams said before the game. “He understands that when Draymond has it at the top and he’s close by, that’s a quick DHO or quick pass and screen. Whereas last year I don’t think they played as quickly in that environment. I think the corporate knowledge he has in this program has allowed for him to be an even better player.”

Poole cooled off in the second quarter before resurging in the second half. Even though he appeared to play through pain, Poole, who leads the league in 3-pointers made this month, made seven of his 15 3-point attempts and finished with 38 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.

Meanwhile, Klay Thompson went cold from the perimeter, going 1-for-10. He finished with 13 points, and Andrew Wiggins added 19.

The Warriors’ energy on offense translated to defense, with Wednesday’s game being one of their best defensive efforts in awhile. Golden State disrupted passing lanes and put constant pressure on the Suns. However, they were lazy with caring for the ball and had XX turnovers.

The Warriors will be off Thursday and practice Friday before returning to Chase Center Saturday to host the Utah Jazz for a 5:30 p.m. tip.
