The Cape Breton Eagles broke a 4-4 tie with 14.3 seconds left in the third period on their way to a 5-4 victory over the Wildcats, Wednesday at Centre 200.
Vincent Labelle, Alex Mercier, Sam Archibald and Alexis Daniel scored for Moncton.
Labelle opened the scoring with under ninety seconds left in the first period, taking a cross-crease pass from Francesco Iasenza and batting it past Eagles goalie Remi Delafontaine. Mercier made it 2-0 36 seconds later, redirecting home a Mathis Cloutier feed from the top of the crease. The Wildcats led 2-0 after twenty minutes.
Cape Breton grabbed momentum in the second period, scoring twice in the final ten minutes to create a 2-2 tie through two periods.
Archibald gave Moncton the lead again nearly twelve minutes into the third, finishing off a 2-on-1 feed for his first Wildcat goal.
The Eagles evened the score again a short time later, but the Wildcats jumped back in front with under four minutes left.
Nicolas Pavan sent a backhand shot on goal from a sharp angle on the right wing side of the net, creating a rebound for Daniel to deposit and give Moncton a 4-3 lead.
Cape Breton got a late powerplay opportunity and tied the game with one minute left in the third and then added the game-winner with only 14.3 seconds left on the clock.
Goalie Vincent Filion was named second star in a 34 save performance.
