David Duchovny Filmed Multiple TikTok Dances For Judd Apatow’s The Bubble
David Duchovny shares the gory details of learning a variety of TikTok dances for his upcoming film The Bubble. The Judd Apatow comedy, which follows a group of actors filming a wacky movie called Cliff Beasts 6 in a pandemic bubble in England, debuts on Netflix on April 1. In addition to Duchovny, the cast is stacked cast with big stars including Karen Gillan, Fred Armisen, Keegan-Michael Key, Leslie Mann, Kate McKinnon, Pedro Pascal, Peter Serafinowicz, and Maria Bakalova, who was nominated for an Oscar for her role in Borat 2.
In The Bubble, Duchovny plays lead actor Dustin Mulray. In addition to starring as Dr. Hal Packard in the Cliff Beasts films, he is in a tumultuous relationship with his co-star Lauren Van Chance, played by Mann. He also evidently performs several TikTok dances in the film, likely roped into it by the social media-obsessed Krystal Kris, who is played by Judd and Leslie's real-life daughter Iris Apatow, who has previously collaborated with her father on projects including Knocked Up, This is 40, and the Netflix series Love.
During an appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Duchovny explained what his experience learning multiple TikTok dances revealed about himself. He laughingly said that "I went through my entire life thinking, you know, I could have been a good dancer." However, his experience rehearsing these dances, at least one of which he also performs with Armisen's character, director Darren Eigan, revealed that "that was a lie I’d been telling myself for many, many years." No [I did not enjoy it]. I went through my entire life thinking, you know, I could have been a good dancer. and then I tried to dance and I realized that was a lie I’d been telling myself for many, many years. We worked really hard at it. There were like four different dance sequences in that film.
In addition to pushing Duchovny to explore his dance skills, The Bubble has asked him to brush up on his comedy, a skill he hasn't utilized in quite some time. Although he has appeared in several iconic funny films like Zoolander, Evolution, and Connie and Carla, it's been years since the actor, who cut his teeth on the sci-fi drama The X-Files has flexed that muscle. More recently, he has appeared in dramas including the short-lived Charles Manson series Aquarius, the reboot series Twin Peaks: The Return, and the revival season of The X-Files.
The Bubble has certainly gathered a group of people fans might never have expected to work together. Hopefully, this casting method will result in unusual and interesting ensemble chemistry that's unlike anything Apatow has produced in the past. That, combined with the film's distinctive premise and willingness to face the realities of the pandemic with a sense of humor, might just result in one of Apatow's biggest successes in quite some time if lightning strikes in just the right way.
