Game of Thrones Co-Creator On Possible Star Wars Return After Exit
Game of Thrones co-creator D.B. Weiss opens up about his and David Benioff's possible Star Wars return after exiting due to scheduling conflicts. The HBO fantasy drama based on George R.R. Martin's novels was Weiss' first major project after a number of scripts he wrote both solo and with Benioff died in development hell, including Wolfgang Petersen's unproduced Ender's Game adaptation, a film adaptation of Halo helmed by Neill Blomkamp and an I Am Legend prequel. Benioff, on the other hand, saw some success prior to Game of Thrones, publishing multiple novels including The 25th Hour, which he would adapt to film with Spike Lee directing, writing the Brad Pitt-starring historical epic Troy and penning The Kite Runner movie adaptation, for which he scored a Golden Globe nomination.
Benioff and Weiss were first announced to be joining the Star Wars universe in 2018 as the Game of Thrones creators were hired by Disney and Lucasfilm to write and produce a new trilogy of films scheduled for 2022, 2024 and 2026 releases. The duo would ultimately have to depart the planned projects as they inked a massive $200 million production deal with Netflix for several films and TV shows. As Star Wars' big screen future remains largely unknown, those almost behind it are sharing their thoughts on whether they'll return to the fold.
In anticipation of the premiere of his upcoming Netflix movie, D.B. Weiss caught up with ComicBook.com to discuss Metal Lords. When asked about his and fellow Game of Thrones creator David Benioff's potential Star Wars return after they exited from writing and producing a trilogy, Weiss downplayed the possibility, citing his busy schedule under his Netflix deal as the key reason. See what Weiss said below:
"Right at the moment, I'm so excited about Metal Lords coming out, and there's also The Three-Body Problem that we're working on and, between those two things, that accounts for about 150% of my attention span. I manage expectations on my mental capacity."
As Weiss mentions, he and Benioff are currently busy working on an adaptation of Liu Cixin's The Three-Body Problem novel trilogy for Netflix in the form of a four-part series, writing and executive producing it with former The Terror showrunner Alexander Woo. Production on the series, which has assembled an ensemble cast led by Eiza González, Benedict Wong, Tsai Chin, John Bradley, Liam Cunningham and Jovan Adepo, kicked off in November, necessitating the duo's attention along with their Lovecraft movie and The Overstory series. With Game of Thrones season 8 receiving mixed-to-negative reviews from critics and audiences alike for its rushed nature, it's for the best that Weiss and Benioff keep their focus on the projects at hand.
Despite the Game of Thrones creators downplaying their potential Star Wars return, the franchise's big screen future isn't all dour as multiple projects are currently in the works, including Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron movie slated for a December 2023 release. Additionally, there are two untitled films slated for 2025 and 2027 releases while Marvel head Kevin Feige and Loki creator Michael Waldron, Taika Waititi and Krysty Wilson-Cairns and Rian Johnson are all developing a variety of feature projects. In the meantime, audiences can catch up with the entirety of the Star Wars saga available to stream on Disney+.
