Morbius Rotten Tomatoes Score: Worst Sony Spider-Man Universe Movie Yet

0

Morbius' Rotten Tomatoes score clocks in as the worst Sony's Spider-Man Universe movie yet as critics slam the droll and dated effort. Sony has been attempting to make a shared comic book universe with characters connected to the Marvel webslinger for nearly a decade, finally kicking it off with the Tom Hardy-starring Venom in 2018. With the film netting a surprise box office haul, Sony moved forward with development on multiple follow-ups, including Hardy's sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Aaron Taylor-Johnson's Kraven the Hunter and Jared Leto's Morbius.

Leto stars in Morbius as the titular scientist suffering from a rare blood disorder who elects to afflict himself with a form of transgenic vampirism in the hopes of curing it. Though he is cured and given superhuman abilities, Morbius finds he now possesses an intense thirst for blood, making him a fugitive as he struggles to get a handle on his monstrous new nature. Following multiple COVID-related delays, Morbius is finally coming to theaters this week, though audiences may not rush to the theater in the same vein as the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

On the heels of the review embargo for the film being dropped, Morbius' Rotten Tomatoes score has been revealed. At the time of writing, with 74 reviews tallied, the Jared Leto vehicle sits at a 20 percent approval rating from critics on the review aggregate site. When compared to both of Tom Hardy's Venom movies, which garnered 30 percent and 58 percent approval ratings respectively, Morbius' Rotten Tomatoes score makes it the worst Sony's Spider-Man Universe movie yet.

Sony's Spider-Man Universe has struggled with critics since Hardy's first Venom movie, which was poorly received for its inconsistent tone, generic narrative and bland direction. The tide did seem to be changing with last year's Venom: Let There Be Carnage, however, as it fell just shy of a "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes with critics commending it for better embracing the odd couple chemistry between both of Hardy's characters and more consistent tone, though still saw some criticism directed towards its rushed pacing and uninteresting action sequences. Given the better reception towards the sequel and audiences' hopes Leto had chosen a better comic book effort with Morbius, anticipation had been fairly high in the months leading up to its release.

With Morbius' Rotten Tomatoes score establishing it as the worst Sony's Spider-Man Universe movie yet, the biggest point of interest for the film will now be whether it can reach the same level of financial success as its predecessors. Despite the lackluster reviews, both Venom movies were box office hits, grossing a combined $1.3 billion, though early projections have pointed towards Leto's film being the lowest-opening Spider-Man live-action movie yet and much lower than Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Only time will tell when Morbius hits theaters on April 1.
