How Moon Knight Could Drive The Avengers Crazy, According to Director
Show director Mohamed Diab reveals how Moon Knight can drive the MCU crazy. Marvel Studios' latest hero has finally arrived via his own Disney+ series. Moon Knight introduces Oscar Isaac's Steven Grant and his alters. But while the show has limited ties to the bigger franchise it belongs to, it's only a matter of time before Moon Knight encounters his fellow heroes in the universe, and Diab has an idea about what it might look like.
After his stints in Star Wars and Dune, Isaac tries again to enter the Marvel world, this time, through the MCU. Viewers can remember that the actor played the titular villain in the disappointing X-Men: Apocalypse which was produced by the then-separated Fox. Now, however, his superhero outing makes him a hero, albeit a complicated one. Audiences are first introduced to Steven Grant; based in London, he's a bumbling but kind gift shop employee. What he doesn't know is that he's suffering from a dissociative identity disorder. He shares the body with Marc Spector who become Moon Knight after he was blessed by the Egyptian moon god, Khonshu with powers.
Moon Knight is confirmed to be set in the MCU despite barely having any references to the wider world he belongs. But, fans know that ultimately, he will emerge from his pocket of the universe and join the Avengers. Diab teases that this could result in Grant driving Earth's Mightiest Heroes crazy in a new interview with Inverse because of his unpredictability. Read his full comment below:
“I could see Marc and Steven driving the characters of the MCU crazy. Marc’s speaking to someone with complete seriousness, and suddenly he turns into Steven, or Moon Knight turns into Mr. Knight. I think it would be amazing.”
The Disney+ series has only released one episode thus far and there are still a lot of questions that need to be answered as it progressed. But Moon Knight did a great job establishing Steven's confusion whenever Marc attempts to take over his body. Multiple times in the premiere, Steven found himself in unfamiliar settings, unaware of what was happening or why he was there. It can be disorienting for fans to see and even heartbreaking at times when Steven tries to live his life. Over time, however, he might get better at balancing his multiple identities. But based on Diab's comments, it seems like he will never be able to control switching personas, the same way Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) was able to do with the Hulk.
For now, Marvel Studios can keep Moon Knight in his separate corner of the MCU. Considering the burgeoning Marvel multiverse, not to mention the potential Skrulls take-over, there's no rush for the hero to join the bigger franchise. If anything, it needs to further develop the character first considering his many identities. But, chances are that once the MCU starts to culminate again, Steven, Marc, and their many other iterations will have their chance to rub elbows with the MCU.
