Destiny 2: Lightfall Could Be An Infinity War-like Event
Destiny 2 has been gearing up for its next main event, Lightfall, which is set to be the conclusion to the current Light versus Darkness arc the series has been telling for the past few years, and it could potentially be similar in scale to the MCU's Avengers: Infinity War. After multiple teases, the main villains of the Destiny universe, the Darkness, are finally coming back to Earth to finish the job they started. Destiny 2: Witch Queen introduced the Witness, who seems to be the leader of the Darkness. Lightfall seems very foreboding, as according to in-game lore and dialogue, it could see the end of the Traveler, and quite possibly the Light.
The Destiny series has told the story of the Light and the Darkness since the first game released in 2014. For the past eight years, Bungie has dedicated itself to writing the upcoming war between the Light and the Dark and Lightfall is looking to be the cumulation of everything players have faced. The seasons to come in Destiny 2 leading up to Lightfall will likely continue to prepare players for the dark and foreboding future of the next expansion. From characters who may return like the Emperor Calus to unlikely allies, Destiny 2: Lightfall is sure to be a climactic finale to the Light and Dark storyline.
Destiny 2: Lightfall could possibly be an Avengers: Infinity War-like event, with multiple iconic characters in the Destiny universe returning and some possible villains becoming the Guardian's allies. There have already been multiple characters such as the Stranger, Elsie Bray, and the Crow, Uldren Sov, who have made a return to Destiny's storyline and have already had some major influence in the narrative. The Witness and the Black Fleet have also been teased to be coming back to Earth to finish the job they had started: the Collapse of Humanity.
It seems like the Witness will be a major villain in the Destiny universe. He is possibly Destiny's Taken King, the being who gave Oryx the Dark power to Take, and his return has been teased by Savathun in The Witch Queen. The Witness is on its way to Earth, after being awoken by the Traveler's burst of energy during the Red War campaign. The Witness was first shown during the final scene of Destiny 2: The Witch Queen. Its disciple, Rhulk, was featured as the final boss of the Vow of the Disciple raid.
Rhulk was a disciple of the Witness and a major player in the overall universe of Destiny. He was responsible for the conversion of the Hive to worshippers of Darkness and the freedom of the Hive worms. Rhulk was also the first being of Darkness that is not of the same race as other enemies players have faced before, being a sneak peek into what fans may face in the future. Destiny 2's Vow of the Disciple raid revealed major lore details surrounding the Darkness as a whole, and has been used to tease the impending doom coming to the solar system in Lightfall.
Iconic characters like Mara Sov, the Awoken Queen, and Mithrax could become Guardians of the Light, preparing humanity and its allies for the coming war with the Black Fleet. The Black Fleet is already proving to be a formidable enemy of the Light with Vow of the Disciple showing players just a taste of the Darkness's power. This could mean the Traveler could try to give power to as many allies as it can. It already has given non-human characters like Savathun the power of the Light, so it may continue that trend in the seasons to come leading up to Destiny 2's Lightfall event.
The Witness has also been recruiting more disciples for the coming war, with some failed attempts like Mara Sov seen during the Parasite exotic quest. That being said, it would make sense for the Traveler to be recruiting as many allies as possible too. The Black Fleet is sure to have many powerful allies and disciples, so the Vanguard and the Light will need to even the odds with their own. Even the exiled Cabal emperor, Calus, could be a disciple of the Witness, which would prove to be very problematic for the Guardian and their allies.
Destiny 2: Lightfall could be the end of the Light as the Guardians know it. The title Lightfall bodes some dark implications for the Traveler's future in Destiny 2. Lightfall could see Destiny's Guardians lose the light again. Players last saw the Guardians lose the Light temporarily during the Red War campaign, though the upcoming 2023 expansion could see a more permanent end of the Light. Bungie has been giving players powers of the Darkness, so it would make sense for the developer to take Light from the players for a while and give everyone a new Darkness subclass. This change would possibly be temporary, however, and might stay until the next DLC or even Destiny 3.
In true Infinity War fashion, Lightfall could end with everyone's favorite heroes failing, and the ultimate destruction of the Traveler. This expansion has the potential to have the darkest ending of any of Destiny 2's expansions, with a seismic impact on the gameplay. Lightfall could end off with the Second Collapse of humanity as both the Traveler and the Last City become destroyed by the Black Fleet. It could also feature a major climactic battle outside the walls of the Last City, with every single ally the players have fought both with and against, teaming with them for a final stand against the Darkness.
Destiny 2: Lightfall has some massive implications for the future of the series and its universe. Enemies turned friends, a second Collapse, and the destruction of the Traveler could all become a reality with the release of this next installment in the story. Destiny 2 has featured some amazing storylines, and Lightfall can finally bring everything together and deliver a climax not unlike the one Marvel delivered in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.
