Grey's Anatomy: 10 People Who Cormac Hayes Should Have Been With
Cormac Hayes was one of the best new characters of Grey's Anatomy. Sure, he wasn't exactly welcoming to his colleagues at first but he quickly became one of the best surgeons in the show. The fact that he was so likeable made his recent exit in season 18 all the more upsetting.
While Hayes had several interesting and heartbreaking storylines during his three years on the show, he never quite coupled up with anyone. He was involved in a love triangle with Meredith Grey for a while but if had he come to Grey Sloan Memorial earlier, there are plenty of people he could have ended up with.
Although the two characters never met (despite both of them appearing in season 17), April and Hayes would have made an amazing couple. Like most Grey's characters, both of them have suffered absolutely devastating losses (April's son and Hayes' wife).
This would have allowed them to bond but they have so much more in common. They are both excellent surgeons and they would be able to bring out the best in each other. April could have brought out a more playful side in Hayes and he would have encouraged April to do what her heart tells her to do.
Addison made a very welcome return in season 18, but she never really got to interact with Hayes, which is a crying shame. She and Hayes would have had amazing banter together, as Addison delivered some of Grey's funniest quotes. Plus, they really would have challenged each other.
Hayes and Addison both have children roughly the same age and they could have formed a really cute little family. Additionally, if they had gotten together, it might have meant that Addison would have returned full time and that Hayes would never have left Grey Sloan Memorial.
Callie Torres and Hayes never crossed paths but they would have made an excellent couple. Callie really grew in her time on Grey's Anatomy. In her first appearance she was fun and cool, but slightly neurotic, especially in her relationship with George O'Malley, one of the worst ships of Grey's Anatomy.
In his first appearance, Hayes was gruff and quite unapproachable at times. Had the two met each other earlier, they would have really helped each other to get past their worst personality traits. Hayes would have encouraged Callie to be herself and she would have persuaded him to have a little fun.
During her time at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, Stephanie had plenty of major storylines, including her final one where she was trapped in a hospital fire. However, she never really got a full romance storyline, excluding her brief but epic love with Kyle Diaz.
However, that lasted less than a season. Had Steph stayed for a few more seasons, she would have met Hayes and sparks would have flown. It would probably have started as an amazing friendship but would have easily sparked into something more, possibly involving on-call rooms.
Unlike most characters on this list, almost all of Maggie's major storylines have been about her relationships. In season 11, she dated Ethan who then left her and got engaged to someone else. Maggie then moved on to Andrew DeLuca, then Nathan Riggs, then Jackson Avery, before finally finding Winston Ndugu.
It's safe to say that Maggie never had much luck in the dating department before she found Winston. Most of those men weren't right for her because they acted selfishly or irresponsibly. Hayes would have had eyes only for Maggie and she wouldn't feel second best with him.
Before Lexie was killed off in Grey's Anatomy season 8, she was a fan-favorite character in her own right. Her relationship with Mark Sloan was short-lived but beautiful. However, Mark forced her to grow up too fast.
With Hayes, although he had children, Lexie would have already known about them before entering into a relationship with him, so she wouldn't be blindsided by this fact. Additionally, watching Lexie with Zola, it was obvious that she would have been an amazing stepmother to Hayes' sons.
Teddy has been through a lot during her two stints on Grey's Anatomy. Like Hayes, she too lost a spouse when her husband Henry died on Cristina Yang's operating table, so she understood his pain when he lost his wife.
Hayes in turn would be able to help Teddy overcome her PTSD caused by her days as an army surgeon. Her PTSD caused Teddy lots of emotional fallout, especially when she cheated on Owen, and Hayes would be a soothing, calming presence to help Teddy.
Megan recently returned to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in season 18, initially for Owen and Teddy's wedding, but then it transpired she had an ulterior motive: her son, Farouk, was severely ill. He needed a heart transplant, or he would die. Megan was absolutely traumatized.
During this terrible time, Hayes was there for Megan and Farouk every step of the way. He did his best to help Megan through it and at times, there was serious chemistry. Plus, he was the only one Megan confided in about not being able to carry on if Farouk died.
When Jo and Hayes first met in season 16, Alex was missing and Jo assumed he was with his mom. During this time, Jo and Hayes seemed to really hit it off. When Alex disgracefully left Jo the way he did, Hayes was there for her as all good friends should be.
Jo leaned more heavily on Hayes during season 17, especially when she lost Luna's mom and started to consider adopting the baby. Hayes knew what Jo was going through and was incredibly supportive throughout the whole process.
Meredith Grey was the obvious choice for Hayes to couple up with, as he had (unknowingly) been sent to Seattle by Cristina as a 'present' for Meredith. Hayes and Meredith were both at similar points in their lives; they had young children and had both lost their spouses fairly recently.
They took a while to get to understand each other as their first encounter was slightly frosty. When they did get to know each other though, Mer and Hayes' friendship became a fan favorite. Additionally, the pair shared a lot of chemistry. Fans were delighted with all the teasing, and many wished they had become an official couple.
