Sky Tempesta Racing Confirm 2022 Programmes

0

Sky Tempesta Racing has today confirmed the details of its participation in the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe Powered by AWS championship (GTWC), for a fourth consecutive season, which will also see the team switch over to AMG Motorsport and the Mercedes AMG GT3.

Following on from 2020 where the team won both the Sprint Cup and Overall Pro-Am Championships, 2021 saw equal success with the team winning the Endurance Cup Pro-Am Championship with drivers Chris Froggatt, Eddie Cheever III and Jonathan Hui at the wheel.

The team has had significant success in the GTWC to date but has yet to conquer the Total Energies 24 hours of Spa race, their best performance a second-place finish in 2020.

Armed with new machinery and more hours of preparation than previous seasons, Sky Tempesta Racing believe they will not only be competing for the championship in 2022, but also the top step of the podium at the 24 Hours of Spa blue-riband event.

This year also sees the introduction of the Gold Cup, a new class within the GTWC. The new category has over a dozen entrants for the Endurance Cup with the requirements being a driver line-up of one FIA graded Bronze, Silver and Gold drivers, mirroring the driver line-up configuration of the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans race.

The team will compete in both the Endurance and Sprint Cup Championships with an unchanged driver line-up that will see Chris Froggatt and Eddie Cheever III again joined by Jonathan Hui for the endurance campaign and the pair taking on five rounds of the Sprint Cup together.

Sky Tempesta Racing will also be competing in select British GT (BGT) rounds throughout the year to grow both the team and drivers’ experience with the new Mercedes AMG GT3. Chris Froggatt will be joined by experienced Macanese driver Kevin Tse for the Silverstone and Oulton Park rounds of the BGT.

The team will also participate in the returning FIA Motorsport Games. Previously held in 2018 and 2019, the event has been formatted as a showdown between more than 19 nations, each entering their own elected drivers to compete in multiple disciplines of racing.

Sky Tempesta Racing has secured the entry as Team GB for this year’s flagship event, to be hosted this winter at the Paul Ricard circuit. The team has previously competed as Team GB in the first two iterations of this event having finished second in 2018, narrowly losing out to team Turkey.

Sky continues its title sponsorship of the racing team that will enable fans to see Sky Tempesta Racing in action on the Sky Sports F1 channel across the season via Sky Q or Sky Glass. Sky VIP is also giving away thousands of tickets and experiences to see the team in action across the UK and Europe this year.

Chris Froggatt: “I am extremely excited with the team’s new direction and challenges coming up in 2022. We will need to be better than ever in order to retain our championship from 2021. The pre-season testing has gone very well to date and I’m feeling ready to compete for the top step of the podium at the opening round in Imola”

Eddie Cheever III: “I am very excited for the new season. There have been many changes for the Sky Tempesta team with the move from Ferrari to Mercedes; but we have the same goals every year – to get into the best position in each race and also win a championship. With the time we’ve spent in testing adapting to the new car, our team is super well prepared and we now have everything in place to achieve success this year. I can’t wait to start the first race in Imola”

Jonathan Hui: “I am delighted to be returning for my 4th season with Sky Tempesta Racing and taking on a new challenge in the Gold Cup category in GTWC with Chris and Eddie. I expect the competition to be incredibly fierce, and the learning curve steep with the new AMG GT3 as I was unable to partake in any pre-season testing. However, I have full confidence in the team and cannot wait to get back behind the wheel at Imola.”
