Hyper Light Drifter's Universe Expands In New Game Hyper Light Breaker
The universe of Hyper Light Drifter, which currently includes the Zelda-like of the same name and last year's Solar Ash, will be getting a new addition in the form of Hyper Light Breaker. While Solar Ash was not a direct sequel to Hyper Light Drifter, it was confirmed by developer Heart Machine that it takes place in the same fictional universe, laying the groundwork for more spin-off titles.
Hyper Light Drifter was released back in 2016 to critical acclaim. Game critics and consumers alike were enthralled by its arresting visuals, satisfying gameplay mechanics, and retro-fusion soundtrack. The game adopted a pixelated art style and top-down perspective reminiscent of 90s RPGs and action games like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. The game is centered around the fundamentals of exploration and combat, though its unique aesthetic is also what many fans remember most about it. Surprisingly, this aesthetic was greatly changed in the gorgeous Solar Ash, despite the two titles sharing the same universe.
Now that this precedent has been set with Solar Ash, Heart Machine is adding a new game to this universe: Hyper Light Breaker. A trailer from the newly formed Hyper Light Breaker YouTube channel shows off a little bit of what this game is about. Though most of the video is an animation of what can be assumed to be the protagonist fighting a group of enemies, the trailer ends with a quick shot of the game's 3D world, suggesting that Hyper Light Breaker will have a similar camera orientation and visual style as Solar Ash. A press release from Gearbox Publishing (which is partnering with Heart Machine for this game) states that Hyper Light Breaker will feature optional co-op - a far cry from the more straightforward gameplay of Solar Ash and Hyper Light Drifter.
Not much is known about this upcoming title, but the fact that players will have the chance to explore the world presented in Hyper Light Drifter in full 3D is likely an exciting prospect for many fans of the original. The shift from 2D to 3D is interesting, as it signals that the more modern presentation was not something that Heart Machine was saving exclusively for Solar Ash.
In that same vein, it's possible that Hyper Light Breaker will be more akin to Solar Ash in terms of gameplay and overall design. The trailer is sparse with details, but the animation certainly recalls the fluid motion of Solar Ash's protagonist. Eager players will have to wait a little longer for more information about this Hyper Light Drifter sequel.
Hyper Light Breaker will launch in early access in Spring 2023.
