Turning Red: 10 Funniest Quotes | Screen Rant
Turning Red recently premiered exclusively on the Disney+ platform. It's the latest Disney Pixar release and the third to go directly to the streaming platform following Soul and Luca. Fans are loving the early 2000s-set coming-of-age story of Meilin, a 13-year-old Chinese Canadian girl balancing friends, family, and her individuality.
Pixar movies are known for being silly and hilarious for both kids and adults, and Turning Red is no different. Of course, it has a major heartwarming message and story, but it is also full of funny jokes throughout.
Mei and her friends are adorably obsessed with the boyband 4*Town, and it's clear that they have their favorites. In her narration, Mei does a deep dive into the first three members going on about their interests or details about them, and suddenly when she gets to the final two members, this is all she has to say.
This is hilarious, especially to fans who have been into boybands. While each member certainly has their own fan base, all classic boybands have the favorites that most fans flock towards, and there are always a couple that is more under-appreciated. It's also hilarious that they have the same name and so get lumped together.
This might be the first time that a Pixar movie has used the word "sexy." After Mei is busted by Ming for drawing some shirtless boys as mermaids and other detailed doodles, she faces public humiliation at the Daisy Mart and then is back in her room, once again.
This quote is so funny because of the tension it reveals in how Mei is grappling with herself. She is torn between feeling like she is supposed to feel shame based on her mom's reaction, but she's also still acknowledging that her drawings were not horrible and awful to her. It's also funny that the merman would be sexy to her. She certainly has some Tina Belcher vibes.
Priya's spell casting is mostly so funny because it's such a quick moment that is easy to miss but adds so much to the scene. Tyler has printed Mei's drawings and put them up all over the lockers, and all of Mei's best friends are going after him in her defense to put an end to the embarrassment.
When they are all heading towards Tyler to take him down, Priya has her hands out as she yells this line, clearly hoping to work some magic and keep Tyler far away from him. It's a perfect moment from her character who seems slightly darker and clearly has a vampire obsession based on the Twilight-looking book she carries.
After Mei has turned into the panda and Ming finds out, it's time for her to share the family history of Sun Yee, their ancestor who prayed to be turned into a red panda to defend and protect her family during war. The red panda once served this very powerful purpose that was a necessity at the time.
Turning Red's Ming is voiced by Sandra Oh, and she has such hilarious delivery when she sums this up for Mei. It represents the transition from this beautiful ancestral story to dealing with the imperfect reality they now have to face with Mei becoming a large red panda in the middle of public school and the city of Toronto.
Mei has some of the best friends ever, so of course, they are at her window to check on her after things go wrong at school. As they bang on her window asking questions and checking on her, Miriam shouts this line. Surprisingly, instead of keeping her red panda a secret like some viewers might expect, Mei lets them in and tells them everything.
This line is so funny because it's such an overdramatic 13-year-old mindset and thing to say. Mei has had an extreme level of embarrassment at this point, with everyone at school seeing her drawings and seeing her mom through the window with pads. It's a fair assumption on Miriam's part while also being such a sweet joke that perfectly suits the stage of life of these characters.
Meilin definitely sees herself as an adult, which she tells the audience from the very beginning of her narration. She refers to herself as an adult multiple times throughout the movie and it is clear during it all that her maturity and womanhood are on her mind. This is her reaction when she feels like she can't go to the 4*Town concert because of her panda.
There are multiple lines in the movie that allude to the fact that the four girls have discussed that seeing 4*Town live would make them really become women. That is such a silly thought that fits the friend group and Mei's mindset of her adulthood so well. She already feels like an adult, but thinks it will take a boyband concert to really make her a woman.
Ming makes it very clear multiple times throughout Turning Red that she is not a fan of the boyband, 4*Town. She reacts negatively any time they appear on the TV, much to Mei's disappointment as it only makes her feel less understood. Ming is not impressed by their outfits or dancing, or really any of it.
When the commercial for the concert comes on, she hears the ticket prices and this line is her reaction. Once again, such an amazing joke delivery from Sandra Oh, and it may be one of the best Ming moments in the movie. It humanizes her to learn about a singer she likes. It also implies she probably belts "My Heart Will Go On" whenever she hears it, which is a fun visual.
Once Mei is turning into her panda and the other women in the family find out, Grandma and the aunties arrive on short notice which takes both Mei and Ming aback. Ming clearly has a complicated relationship with her mother, and having four aunties along for the trip adds to the chaos.
As Ming apologizes for not being able to host everyone, probably due to lack of space and short notice, she says she hopes the hotel is fine. One of the aunties responds with this line, which is such a relatable sentiment, and also funny since breakfast would be free for her if she was staying with Ming too.
It's easy to assume that Mei, Miriam, Priya, and Abby probably talk about the 4*Town boys all the time, especially since fans see a lot of it throughout the movie. They stay easily entertained daydreaming and asking each other questions about the boys and speculating about what they don't know.
This is such a silly question for Priya to ask, but Miriam's answer is so specific and absurd, it's ridiculous and hilarious. It begs the question what do wet rocks even smell like? And how would these two things smell together? To make it even funnier, all four of them giddily freak out in response to this answer.
Ming makes it very clear throughout the movie that she considers the types of dancing that 4*Town and their fans do to be "gyrating" and Mei takes this into consideration when fighting with her. She chooses to dance as a form of expression and to get her mom to understand who she really is.
Mei goes crazy in panda mode, busting out all her moves and shaking her panda butt. Abby is known for her yelling throughout the movie, and that makes this joke even funnier. Abby screams this with all of her might. If the visual of Mei's panda dancing to upset her giant panda mother wasn't funny enough, this line seals the deal.
