Avengers: Endgame "Whatever It Takes Line" Gets A New Darker Meaning
Warning! Spoilers for Devil's Reign #6 by Marvel Comics
One of the most iconic lines in Avengers: Endgame is getting flipped on its head in a new preview for the finale of the Devil's Reign event from Marvel Comics. In Devil's Reign #6, the line, "Whatever it takes," is used by Luke Cage as the heroes are overwhelmed by Kingpin's forces. The use of the phrase, said by Captain America in Avengers: Endgame, carries a darker meaning this time around.
Among the best moments in Avengers: Endgame was the hopeful rallying cry from Captain America to the surviving heroes to do "Whatever it takes," to bring back their fallen friends and those snapped away by Thanos. The line showed that the heroes had a singular goal in mind: win and come back from their time travel adventures with the Infinity Stones needed to bring those who were snapped away. Despite the seemingly impossible odds they faced, Steve Rogers' words inspired his fellow heroes as they began their quest to retrieve the Infinity Stones. Now, the iconic line is getting flipped on its head, with a darker meaning in the Devil's Reign event from Marvel Comics.
In a brand new preview for Devil's Reign #6 by Chip Zdarsky, Marco Checchetto, and Marcio Menyz, the hero's final stand against Kingpin and the Purple Man leads to an incredible battle between heroes and villains. Wilson Fisk has used the Purple Man's mind-control powers to send heroes against one another while directing the Thunderbolts against them as well. As Captain America tries to tell John Walker that he's not acting as he should and Daredevil leaves the fight to go after the Kingpin after learning of his brother's death, Luke Cage echos the Avengers: Endgame line, saying they have to do "... whatever it takes" to stop the Purple Man.
The darker meaning of the "whatever it takes" line shows the heroes will need to do everything possible to stop the Purple Man before the battle has mass casualties. The line seems to suggest killing the Purple Man might be their only option.
Unlike Avengers: Endgame, where Captain America told his fellow heroes they will do "Whatever it takes," to bring their friends back, in this case, the line has a much darker meaning. The non-mind-controlled heroes will need to do "whatever it takes" to ensure that only they don't get hurt in the deadly battle, but that innocents lives aren't taken in the process. Stopping the Kingpin and his forces will take everything the heroes got. Devil's Reign #6 by Marvel Comics is in stores on Wednesday.
