Bruce Campbell shares a “behind-the-scenes” image from Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessin honor of April Fools’ Day. Campbell and Raimi’s work relationship stretches back to the first three Evil Dead films. After making a name for himself in the horror genre, Raimi famously helmed Sony’s Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire beginning in 2002. Campbell had iconic cameos in all three of those films, playing the Ring Announcer in Spider-Man, the "Snooty Usher" in Spider-Man 2, and a Maître d' in Spider-Man 3.
This year, Raimi makes his long-awaited return to the comic book genre courtesy of Multiverse of Madness—which is poised to utilize the director’s horror talents. Originally, the director of the first Doctor Strange, Scott Derrickson, was supposed to return for the sequel but left the project due to creative differences. Therefore, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige brought in his former co-worker Raimi. Fans have held out hope that the director would reunite with another co-worker in Campbell and continue their cameo tradition. Campbell first teased his involvement in Multiverse of Madness last April Fools’ Day and now, he’s done it again.
Campbell recently took to Twitter to share a faux BTS photo from Multiverse of Madness. The image shows the actor in the makeup chair with a photo-shopped reflection that sports the goatee and hair of Doctor Stephen Strange. Check it out below:
If it wasn’t April Fools’ Day (or posted by Campbell), the above photo might imply the inclusion of yet another variant. Trailer footage has revealed Multiverse of Madness will feature multiple variants, including an evil Strange/Strange Supreme, Defender Strange, and Patrick Stewart as a version of Professor Charles Xavier. Following Disney/Marvel Studios’ acquisition of Fox in 2019, Multiverse of Madness can include variants from pretty much any Marvel film—from X-Men and Deadpool to the Fantastic Four. While the above post is clearly a joke, Campbell could indeed make a comedic cameo as a variant of Doctor Strange or another well-known character.
Raimi’s Multiverse of Madness has the potential to feature an endless array of multiversal characters. Even Maguire’s Spider-Man is rumored to cameo in the film, which would also open Sony's door for Campbell to reprise his role from any of Raimi’s previous films. He has said that he filmed a cool scene with a beloved character, but Campbell doesn’t know if he's in the movie following Multiverse of Madness’ extensive reshoots. Regardless, fans can’t wait to see (or not see) Campbell when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness releases in theaters on May 4.
