Doctor Strange's Ultimate Weapon Makes Wolverine's Claws Look Weak
Warning: contains spoilers for Devil's Reign: Superior Four #3
The ultimate weapon Doctor Strange has access to when fighting opponents who are physically stronger than him makes Wolverine's claws look like toys. Wolverine’s entire skeleton is coated in adamantium, one of the strongest metals in the Marvel Universe. Almost nothing can cut through adamantium, including adamantium, though one Doctor Strange variant revealed a weapon that would seemingly do so with little effort.
In Devil’s Reign: Superior Four #3 by Zac Thompson and Davide Tinto, Doctor Octopus and his variants from three other universes have taken on the mission of traveling across the multiverse to absorb the energy of every other Doc Ock in existence. In this issue, they have traveled to a realm ruled by a being known as Supreme Ock, a variant who is a mixture of Doc Ock, Doctor Doom, and Doctor Strange. When Supreme Ock decides to finish off the multiversal invaders for good, he whips out one of the most powerful weapons in a sorcerer’s arsenal.
The Doc Ock/Doctor Strange variant summons a mystical sword known as the Blade of Bawk and boasts that the weapon can cut through anything. One of the other Doc Ock variants who is held within Supreme Ock’s villainous grasp is a version of the Spider-Man rogue mixed with Wolverine, complete with the original Logan’s adamantium claws. When Supreme Ock brandishes the Blade of Bawk, saying it can cut through anything, with the intention of cutting through every one of the Doc Ock variants he has captured, the implication here is that the sword can slice through adamantium, achieving what almost nothing else can and proving how absolutely deadly this weapon truly is.
While readers don’t get to see the blade in action, Supreme Ock’s confidence while wielding it speaks to the sword’s power. Plus, throughout this limited series, Supreme Ock has shown off the spectacular power he is able to conjure through his mastery of the mystic arts, so the fact that he summoned the Blade of Bawk to dispatch the Doc Ock variants, including the Wolverine version, means that the blade was the best weapon to use in that situation out of all the magical weapons in his arsenal.
Even though it isn’t Doctor Strange himself wielding the Blade of Bawk but a variant of the Sorcerer Supreme, the two have nearly identical magic and therefore the same access to mystical artifacts. If Supreme Ock can summon the blade, so too can Doctor Strange, and if the sorcerer ever had a need for it against Wolverine, the nearly unkillable X-Man would be in trouble as shown in this issue, proving that Doctor Strange’s ultimate weapon is more powerful than Wolverine’s claws.
