Vote now: Bay Area News Group girls athlete of the week

Welcome to the Bay Area News Group (Mercury News & East Bay Times) girls athlete of the week poll.

For the entire academic year, we will provide a list of candidates who stood out over the previous week and allow you, the reader, to vote for the winner.

This week, we consider performances from March 28-April 3.

Polls close at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Vote as many times as you’d like until then.

Candidates for future Athlete of the Week polls can be nominated at highschools@bayareanewsgroup.com.

We also review stats submitted to MaxPreps by coaches/team statisticians.

Torre Anderson, Foothill track and field: Falcons senior won girls long jump at Stanford Invitational with a leap of 18-feet, ¼-inch. It was her sixth win in seven meets this season, according to Athletic.net. She has also won gold in the 100 and 200 meters, high jump, and 100 and 200 relays.

Scarlett Dawson, Alameda track and field: Hornets senior set season-best by leaping 36-feet, 4¾-inches to win girls triple jump at the Stanford Invite. Her mark was 1¾ inches further than her previous best in 2022, according to Athletic.net. She has won the TJ in four meets this year.

Kyra Hawk, Harker lacrosse: Junior attack and midfield player scored 27 goals and had five assists in a 4-0 week for the Eagles. She had all eight goals in Harker’s 8-6 win over Sacred Heart Cathedral. For the season, she has tallied 49 of her team’s 79 goals. 

Morgan Hunt, Piedmont softball: Junior slugger was 5-for-8 with two homers and eight RBI as Piedmont moved to 4-0 in the WACC Shoreline Division. She hit a grand slam in a win over San Lorenzo and had four hits and four RBI vs. Encinal. She’s hitting .478 with three homers this season. 

Abigail Kaneko, Berkeley softball: Senior RHP went the distance as the Yellowjackets surprised No. 17 Alameda 2-1 in 10 innings last Thursday. She had 11 strikeouts as Berkeley won its seventh game in a row, improving to 7-2 overall.

Kylie Liu, Gunn softball: Catcher and team co-captain drove in six runs with two homers and a double in a 10-6 win over Presentation. Senior was 7-for-10 with nine RBIs for the week. Pomona College commit has four homers, 27 RBI and a .619 batting average this season. 

Madison MacPherson, Clayton Valley Charter swimming: Senior won the 50-yard fly and 200-yard freestyle in a dual meet with Benicia won by CVC 185-123. Time of 2:34.25 in the 200 free was more than 17 seconds faster than the runner-up. She posted a time of 36.31 seconds in the 50.

Jessica Oakland, St. Francis softball: Minnesota-bound senior led Lancers to a 4-1 record at the prestigious Michelle Carew Classic in Anaheim. She went 8-for-13 with two homers and nine RBIs for the Bay Area News Group’s top-ranked team. Only loss was 3-2 to host Canyon. 

Cate Peters, Monte Vista track and field: Junior sprinter won girls 400-meters dash in 54.74 seconds at Stanford Invite. Her time was a personal best. According to Athletic.net, she is undefeated in five 200- and 400-meters races this season..

Kassandra Soria, Santa Teresa softball: Senior led Saints to a 4-0 week. Her biggest game was in a 5-3 win over No. 16 Westmont. She drove in all five runs with a pair of homers. Later in the week, she had a triple in a 10-1 win over Homestead. Santa Teresa is 9-3 this season.
