Bassitt Strikes Out Six in Clover Park Spring Finale

Chris Bassitt made his second start of spring on Sunday at Clover Park in the Mets’ spring home finale. He gave up four earned runs on six hits, two walks, and two home runs in five innings of work against the Marlins.

The home runs he gave up were a one-out solo home run to Jorge Soler in the first inning and a two-run home run to Jesus Aguilar in the fourth inning.

Bassitt threw well on Sunday, making just those couple of mistakes. He threw 90 pitches (56 for strikes). He gave up an additional run in the fourth as well on an RBI single to Jacob Stallings that scored Joey Wendle.

Bassitt was replaced on the mound by Chasen Shrieve, but Bassitt would still take the overall game win with his five innings pitched.

Overall this spring for Bassitt, he is 2-0 with a 3.72 ERA over the course of 9 2/3 innings pitched. He has struck out nine and appears to have begun catching the eye of fans and Mets coaching staff as well as he continues to strive to get a roster spot for a starting pitching position this regular season.

Bassitt will be one of the many Mets rotation members who have to step up in the absence of Jacob deGrom while he’s out with a shoulder injury. The 33-year-old doesn’t seem too concerned with the time deGrom will miss, though.

“It is what it is,” he told reporters Sunday. “That’s baseball. The old saying is, ‘if you don’t like what’s going on, give it a week and then everything’s changed.’ We’ll be perfectly fine.”

Bassitt is lined up to start the Mets’ second game of the year against the Washington Nationals on April 8. It’s unclear who will pitch for the Nats. That game will be broadcast for free on Apple TV+.
