10 Best Sailor Moon Characters According To Ranker | ScreenRant

0

When a series like Sailor Moon features a team of very different heroes, the audience members are bound to have very different favorites. There's been debate since the '90s as to whether Sailor Jupiter or Sailor Mars were the best teammates, whether Sailor Moon should have been the team leader at all, or whether Sailor Mercury contributed enough.

All of those debates have raged on with the adaptations of Sailor Moon Crystal and Sailor Moon Eternal. Thanks to Ranker, more than 15,000 votes have attempted to settle just who the best characters in the Sailor Moon franchise are. It's no surprise that most of the Sailor Senshi make it into the top ten, but there are a few surprising additions.

10 Artemis

It might be a surprise that Artemis beats out some of the other main characters in fan rankings since he's not quite as developed a character as Luna is. Artemis and Luna frequently disagree over what the Sailor Senshi should do, but they're both powerful resources for the team as they remember more of their past lives than the teenage girls do.

Fans have a lot of questions about Sailor Venus, but they all know how devoted Artemis is to her. The two of them are teamed up before they begin interacting with any of the rest of the Sailor Senshi, and he never gives up on her — even when she gives up on herself.

9 Sailor Jupiter

Sailor Jupiter is simultaneously the most practical and the most romantic of Sailor Senshi. Part of what makes her so appealing to the audience is that she's a mass of contradictions, making her one of the most layered characters in the series.

Makoto lives alone after the deaths of her parents and takes care of herself — as well as often being the one to provide homemade lunches and pastries for her friends. She longs to find a fairy tale romance, but she's also perfectly capable of living her life independently. She's sweet and tries to make friends with everyone she meets, but she also won't hesitate to take on a bully and potentially tarnish her reputation because she's incredibly strong even when she's not powered up as Sailor Jupiter.

8 Sailor Moon

Sailor Moon not being the most popular character in her own franchise isn't unusual. Of the characters, she is the most typical female anime/manga protagonist. As Usagi Tsukino, the character is clumsy, often afraid of heading into battle as Sailor Moon, and preoccupied with her love life.

She does grow a lot over the course of the series into a capable leader and someone her friends have undying loyalty to, which is part of what makes her so appealing to the audience. Her jealousy, however, especially over Chibiusa in later storylines, is enough for the audience to prefer other characters.

7 Luna

Other than Sailor Moon herself, Luna is the only character from the Moon Kingdom who makes an appearance in the very first episode/chapter of the series and remains until the very end. She is the wisest of the Sailor Senshi team and the one who remembers the most of her previous life.

Luna's popularity is evident considering she's had her own spin-off stories in the manga and whole episodes devoted to her in the '90s anime.

6 Sailor Mercury

Sailor Mercury gets a lot of heat from fans because she doesn't utilize many defensive powers in battle. But without her, the team would definitely fall apart.

Sailor Mercury is their strategist, the one responsible for actually analyzing their adversaries while the team keeps them busy. She's also the one who keeps all of the teenagers on task in their civilian lives. Without her encouraging them all to study, their superhero efforts might make them all fail their classes.

5 Sailor Venus

Though Sailor Moon becomes their leader when all of the Sailor Senshi are reincarnated, it's Sailor Venus who is the true leader of the team. She even has her own story as a warrior outside of the group with the Codename: Sailor V manga as she battles dark forces throughout Europe.

Sailor Venus is certainly the most dedicated to the cause. Despite her having her own dreams of being a pop star in various adaptations of the source material, she never backs down from a fight or leaves her friends hanging, always finding a way to balance her own dreams with her duty to the team.

4 Sailor Neptune

The Outer Senshi are introduced in the series much later than the Inner Senshi. As such, the audience doesn't get to spend nearly as much time with Sailor Neptune, Sailor Uranus, Sailor Pluto, and Sailor Saturn. They all have a distinct air of mystery about them as a result of not having as much story. But that doesn't stop them from being fan favorites.

No matter what she does, whether it's playing the violin, swimming, or battling evil, Sailor Neptune has a grace and maturity about her that the other characters don't. She's also got quite a bit of power even when she's not in her Sailor Senshi mode. With prophetic dreams and psychic visions, she makes for one of the more intriguing civilian characters.

3 Sailor Saturn

Sailor Saturn is certainly one of the most fascinating of the Sailor Senshi. She exists as an entirely separate entity inside Hotaru, unlike the rest of the Senshi who are their civilian personas. She's also seen as one of the most dangerous, the person the rest of the Outer Senshi most fear "waking" because she has the power to destroy the planet.

The fact that such a destructive force exists in one of the youngest Sailor Senshi is part of what makes her so interesting. Sailor Saturn doesn't truly want to destroy either, but that's her job as the Sailor Senshi responsible for death and rebirth.

2 Sailor Pluto

Sailor Pluto is the most isolated of the Sailor Senshi. Much like Sailor Saturn, she doesn't initially spend much time with the team as a whole. Instead, she guards the door to space and time in a possible future timeline.

Of course, when Setsuna is reborn in the modern day, she does get the chance to interact with the others a bit more. Her Sailor Pluto duties become more offensive than defensive as a result. She's a scientist and holds a soft spot for Chibiusa, so it's hard not to like her.

1 Sailor Mars

The characterization of Sailor Mars has gone through a lot of changes in the different adaptations. In the '90s anime, she's something of an antagonist for Usagi as the two can never get along for more than a few minutes at a time, and even have crushes on the same boys.

The Sailor Mars of the manga, however, and of the more recent Sailor Moon Crystal adaptation, isn't quite as confrontational. She retains the strength of the '90s version of the character and her same passion in battle without being so antagonistic. Like Sailor Neptune, she also has prophetic visions and dreams, giving her the chance to warn the Inner Senshi of coming dangers.
