Jim Carrey Explains Robotnik's Mustache In Sonic 2 | Screen Rant

0

Jim Carrey explains what Dr. Robotnik's mustache reveals about the character in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Although experiencing a bit of a rocky lead-up to its release in 2019 and 2020, the first Sonic the Hedgehog proved to be a hit with audiences, earning over $306 million at the box office and leading to the announcement of a sequel. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 promises to bring back Ben Schwartz's Sonic and Carrey's evil genius, Dr. Robotnik, and introduce fan-favorite characters from the games like Knuckles (Idris Elba) and Tails (Colleen O'Shaughnessey).

While Dr. Robotnik seems to have been defeated at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog, having been banished to the Mushroom Planet, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 brings the villain character back. Even more wild and wacky than in the first movie, Dr. Robotnik also features a brand new look, the most significant part of which is a gigantic, game-accurate mustache. Initial trailers for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 tease plenty of action and laughs with an even more explosive showdown between Sonic and Dr. Robotnik.

In an exclusive Screen Rant interview, Carrey goes into detail about what exactly the new and improved (and enlarged) mustache signals about the character of Dr. Robotnik. Carrey explains that the mustache is more than just a nod to the character in the games and that it signals something deeper about Dr. Robotnik's psyche, joking that it's akin to a 70-year-old buying a Corvette sports car. Check out Carrey's full comment about the mustache below:

"It was a manifestation of absolute ego. Definitely, a man with a stash that big has some kind of insecurity. It's like buying a Corvette at 70."

Any good screenwriter, actor, or director will attest that villains need to be as three-dimensional as heroes. While, on the surface, Dr. Robotnik would generally be defined by his desire to do evil and achieve world domination, it's clear that Carrey has delved deep into his character and thought about what a giant mustache might signal about someone's state of mind. Although Carrey seems to be at least partly joking in his comment, it's clear that the actor has uncovered a profoundly human level to Dr. Robotnik that looms beneath the surface of all the evil deeds.

Initial reviews for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 are mixed thus far, but many have praised the film for its action, humor, pacing, and Carrey's over-the-top performance as Dr. Robotnik. A third Sonic the Hedgehog movie is reportedly already in development, but it remains to be seen whether Carrey will be making a return as the fan-favorite Dr. Robotnik, especially considering the actor's recent comments about Sonic the Hedgehog 2 being his last movie before retirement. Audiences can check out Dr. Robotnik's large mustache when the film releases on April 8th.
