The Blu-Ray of Paul Thomas Anderson's 2021 film Licorice Pizza will include a plethora of bonus content and now has a release date. The Oscar-nominated movie, released in theatres in late 2021 to commercial and critical acclaim, features an electric ensemble cast including Sean Penn, Tom Waits, Bradley Cooper, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, and Maya Rudolph. Licorice Pizza also debuts two young actors as the leads of the film– musician Alaina Haim and Cooper Hoffman – in their first film roles, rendering the admirable quality of their performances particularly notable.
On May 17, 2022, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment will release the Blu-ray of Licorice Pizza. In addition to a high-quality disc rendering of the 134-minute film, the Blu-ray includes a limited-edition poster, double-sided cover art, and special behind-the-scenes content. The bonus components exclusive to the Blu-ray and DVD release include pre-production camera tests, a deleted scene, an "in-universe" commercial for Fat Bernie, and a photo and video collection chronicling the production. Furthermore, the purchase of the film provides viewers with points for the Universal All-Access Rewards program. A digital format of the film will also be available through Universal.
Anderson has confirmed that Licorice Pizza loosely bases its content on his adolescent experiences, offering the film's narrative a dreamy yet grounded nostalgic lens. In reference to this sentiment of a self-referentiality, the unique, quirky title Licorice Pizza refers to the name of a former California record-store chain recalled from Anderson's youth. Licorice Pizza is the ninth feature-length film of the legendary director's impressive and multifaceted oeuvre. The film also holds a nostalgic value in its casting – Hoffman is the son of Phillip Seymour Hoffman, the late actor with whom Anderson collaborated for many of his classic films, including Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and The Master.

Licorice Pizza, rooted in this reverence of youth and heartache in days gone by, thus illustrates an evocative reminiscence of a past era, simultaneous with the universal experience of coming of age even today. Excitingly, the promised exclusive peek inside Licorice Pizza's production and other bonus content offered with the Blu-ray release will provide further context to this transcendent artistic quality for audiences to enjoy.
