Why Jim Carrey's Eggman Mustache Is So Much Bigger In Sonic 2

0

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Sonic the Hedgehog 2!

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 features the return of Dr. Eggman (Jim Carrey), this time sporting a much bigger mustache for some reason. While Eggman did have a stylish 'tache in the first film, it was fairly groomed and felt like something that could easily be seen in the real world. However, in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the villainous Eggman's facial hair has become so big that it's cartoonish.

The end of the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie concludes with Eggman and one of his ships being pushed through one of Sonic's ring portals. Eggman becomes stranded on a planet that features no life other than mushrooms, meaning that Eggman is stuck for a while. However, the beginning of Sonic 2 shows that Eggman has made a nice home for himself in the unspecified amount of time that he has been stranded. However, by using one of the blue quills, Eggman extracts some of Sonic the Hedgehog's power, setting off a complex series of events that allows him to return to Earth and seek revenge on the blue blur.

Due to his extended isolation from civilization on the mushroom planet, Dr. Eggman has become quite unkempt. Not only are his clothes dirty and disheveled, but his mustache has also grown out significantly. Eggman clearly didn't have the necessary supplies to maintain the well-groomed mustache he sports in the first film, so it makes sense that it's a little messier while he's on the alien planet. The surprising thing, though, is that he keeps the mustache when he eventually returns to Earth. While Eggman does get a perfect look again by changing his clothes and utilizing his robots, he mostly keeps the same facial hair. He does have some robots that groom it for him, but he mostly retains the long, wavy look.

While the story explanation of Eggman's mustache is fairly simple, there is also a deeper meaning behind it. Sonic 2's Eggman mustache is far more accurate to the video games than the first Sonic movie. Eggman's new clothes, bald head, and search for the Master Emerald are also closer to the games, but the absurdly large mustache is Eggman's signature trait. One of the main criticisms of Sonic the Hedgehog is that it mostly ignored the games. Because of this, Sonic 2 promised to be more game-accurate, something that is highlighted by Eggman's new design. So, Eggman appearing the way signifies the fundamental changes that Sonic 2 makes to the series, and Jim Carrey's mustache is the bow on top.

Dr. Eggman's big mustache not only makes sense for the character but also fixes a problem with the first movie. Eggman is only one of the many changes the movie makes to be more game-accurate, but it is the most noticeable one. Jim Carrey's performance captures the essence of Dr. Eggman in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and his large new mustache makes a great character even better.
