Northman Trailer: Alexander Skarsgård Fights On Top Of Erupting Volcano
A vengeful Alexander Skarsgård sword fights atop an erupting volcano in the latest trailer for The Northman. Scandinavian folklore serves as the inspiration for Robert Eggers’ follow-up to his acclaimed 2019 drama The Lighthouse. The film stars Skarsgård as a young prince on a life-long quest for revenge after the murder of his father and the capture of his mother.
The story told in The Northman should indeed strike a familiar chord as it’s based on the same folk tale that inspired Shakespeare’s immortal Hamlet. But Eggers’ take on this particular legend in fact promises to be less Shakespeare and more Conan the Barbarian. In addition to Skarsgård, the film stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, Claes Bang and Björk.
Previous trailers for The Northman have indeed made it clear that the movie is a brutal and epic experience filled with massive battle scenes and more than a little weirdness. But the newest trailer takes things to an even higher level, teasing an actual sword fight on top of an erupting volcano, while also touting the movie's many rave reviews. Considering the brutal carnage previewed in the above clip, it’s no surprise that Skarsgård confessed to being “exhausted” during The Northman shooting. For her part though, Skarsgård’s co-star Taylor-Joy claimed to enjoy spending her days on the film slopping around in the cold and mud for the sake of Eggers’ uncompromising vision. Much of this discomfort was of course in the service of crafting brutally realistic battle scenes worthy of the big-screen format. But Eggers is obviously interested in something more than strict realism, as there’s also a strong element of mysticism to his depiction of the distant past. Indeed it should be no surprise to see Eggers blending the mystical and the real in The Northman, as he pulled much the same trick on his very first film The Witch. But according to Eggers himself, he didn’t quite nail what he was going for on his acclaimed debut feature, claiming recently that nowadays he can't even bring himself to watch the movie.
It remains to be seen how Eggers will feel about his latest film The Northman after he’s had a few years to chew on it. Critics however are very high on the movie, which currently carries a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Given the movie’s reported $90 million budget, Focus Features surely hopes that audiences will be as enthused about it as critics have been. The newest The Northman trailer certainly teases an epic movie with a lot of potentially crowd-pleasing elements, including the always-thrilling sight of two people engaging in a sword fight on top of an erupting volcano. But that signature Eggers weirdness could still prove to be too much of a turn-off for general audiences.
