Tyler Hoechlin Is Best Superman Since Reeve, Says Superman & Lois Star
A Superman & Lois star has called Tyler Hoechlin the best version of the Man of Steel since Christopher Reeve's portrayal of Superman. One of The CW's biggest Arrowverse shows in the whole line-up is Superman & Lois, which premiered in 2021, following Hoechlin and Bitsie Tulloch's titular characters. Unlike past iterations of the DC icons, the Arrowverse incarnation focuses on Lois and Clark dealing with their jobs while also tackling parenthood. With the Superman mythology being one of the most iconic and beloved DC properties, it didn't take long for the Arrowverse drama to become a fan favorite.
Throughout the decades, many talented actors have brought the Last Son of Krypton to life on the big and small screens. Outside of Reeve, Brandon Routh portrayed Superman in Superman Returns and reprised the role in Arrowverse's Crisis on Infinite Earths. When Warner Bros. rebooted the property, Henry Cavill suited up as the DCEU's Superman in Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Zack Snyder's Justice League. While he didn't suit up until the series finale, Tom Welling's Clark Kent was essentially Superman throughout 10 years on Smallville as he grew into the legend that the world knows and loves. In the 1990s, Dean Cain played the mild-mannered hero throughout four seasons of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman alongside Teri Hatcher as Lois. However, with so many incarnations of the Superman legend, there is an ongoing debate about who is the best iteration.
According to one of Superman & Lois' leading stars, Hoechlin is the best one since Reeve. In a new interview with Looper, Alex Garfin, who plays Lois and Clark's son Jordan Kent, spoke heavily about why he sees his co-star as the best portrayal of Superman since the late actor who donned the role between 1978 and 1987. Per Garfin, it's how Hoechlin approaches his depiction of Clark that plays a vital role in why he sees the show's Superman as one that who stands out, stating the following.
"No, we really haven't seen someone absolutely nail Clark and Superman since [Christopher] Reeve, and really, Tyler [Hoechlin], not watching people, he said that was his strategy, right? He said he never wanted to see any Superman. He doesn't want to watch any Superman until this is all over. Then, he will watch it all to understand what everyone's been talking about this whole time. He brings a new light to the role. He brings himself to the role, and he brings a volume of experience going all the way back to 'Road to Perdition' when he was a kid. The magic of Tyler Hoechlin is not even in the crazy, deep emotional scenes, even though he absolutely is amazing at them. It's always in the Clark stuff. It's his ability to have fun on screen.
Hoechlin has portrayed Superman since the early days of Supergirl. After CBS decided not to go forward with Supergirl season 2, The CW took over the DC drama and added it to its line-up of Arrowverse shows. Hoechlin came in as that world's version of Superman for the first two episodes of the new season, giving fans a fun adventure between the two Super-cousins. Hoechlin returned for the Elseworlds and Crisis on Infinite Earths crossovers, where viewers also got a taste of Tulloch's Lois before Superman & Lois released.
Not only is Hoechlin's Superman a phenomenal depiction of the DC icon, but fans will have so many years to enjoy his version of the character. With Superman & Lois season 2 now airing, there are still many seasons to come where the writers can continue to take the hero in new directions. Though Superman & Lois season 2 has not yet wrapped up, The CW has already greenlit the series for season 3, which will air in the 2022-2023 TV season. Hopefully, depending on what happens at the end of Superman & Lois season 2, Hoechlin's Superman will get to engage with The CW's other heroes in future Arrowverse crossovers. At the very least, Hoechlin's co-stars admire what he is already achieving.
