Rob Zombie adds yet another horror icon to his Munsters reboot in the form of Dee Wallace. The Halloween and 3 From Hell director confirmed his involvement with the passion project last June and revealed a new cast depicting Lily, Herman, and Grandpa Munster shortly after. Production has been ongoing in Budapest since at least the fall of 2021, with Zombie chronicling the process on social media. Based on the behind-the-scenes photos, Zombie aspires to take the classicly creepy suburban family back to their roots while injecting some of his uniquely macabre vision into the film.
There are no official plot details for the film yet, but Zombie has shared several exciting cast announcements, complete with exclusive set photos of their respective characters. Joining Sheri Moon Zombie, Jeff Daniel Phillips, and Daniel Roebuck (as the core Munsters family members) are Zombie mainstay Richard Brake, Jorge Garcia, Sylvester McCoy, and Catherine Schell as four completely new characters. Additionally, legendary horror hostess Cassandra Peterson (AKA Elvira) will play another new character, Barbara Carr. Now, the director further amplifies the genre star power with a scream queen.
Yesterday, Rob Zombie took to Instagram once again to announce Dee Wallace as the voice of Good Morning Transylvania, the country's "2nd favorite morning show… soon slipping to 3rd if they don't update their format." Wallace is a cult horror superstar, appearing in The Stepford Wives, The Hills Have Eyes, Cujo, and more. Wallace's unnamed character appears to be yet another new addition to The Munsters canon, acting as a radio host that the Munsters family will most likely listen to throughout the film. While Wallace is a fantastic casting for many reasons, the pertinent question is whether or not the actress will physically appear in the film, or if she will indeed only be the voice of Good Morning Transylvania via audio. Wallace is also a frequent Zombie collaborator and lent her voice to his Haunted World of El Superbeasto, so she wouldn't be new to voiceover work.
Even if she does not appear on-screen, Wallace's inclusion should make any genre fan hesitant about the reboot moderately hopeful that it will appease them. The Munsters is already a marked departure from Zombie's usual graphic horror, so the appearance of Elvira and another horror icon signifies that the project is not only a love letter to The Munsters TV series but a love letter to cult horror. And Wallace's role could play hand-in-hand with Grandpa Munster's yearning for his homeland of Transylvania, another sign that Zombie's concept for the film is promising.
