Star Trek 64 Looks Like The Best Zelda Crossover Game Ever

0

A talented animator is creating a Star Trek: The Next Generation game in the style of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The beloved sci-fi series, a successorto the original Star Trek show, introduced fans to an entire new cast of Starfleet explorers and inspired a number of film follow-ups. While one fan recently brought Zelda: Ocarina of Time to Unreal Engine, other creators prefer to embrace the game's retro Nintendo 64 graphics.

While it may be outdated, the Nintendo 64 is still fondly remembered for its nostalgic graphics and amazing lineup of hit games. The console's polygonal character models may look rough by today's standards, but there is a definite charm in seeing characters with blocky hands and expressionless faces. Throughout its lifespan numerous beloved games launched on the Nintendo 64, like Super Mario 64Banjo-KazooieStar Fox 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Despite now being more than twenty years old, the enduring popularity of the console was recently demonstrated when a long-lost Tim Burton N64 game called Carnivalé: Cenzo’s Adventure was released in January 2022.

Talented Twitter user SpinaSanctuary has transformed Star Trek: The Next Generation into a Nintendo 64 game in the style of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The amazing artist and animator has revealed various images and videos of the project, which seems to faithfully pay homage to both pieces of retro entertainment. One gif sees Patrick Stewart's iconic Captain Picard obtaining the Mask of Korgano, just as Link would acquire a mask in Ocarina of Time, while another video shows him playing the Ressikan flute. The most recent image shows Worf preparing for battle with a Klingon knife.

Despite first releasing in 1996, the Nintendo 64 continues to inspire art and modifications from fans of old-school gaming. While SpinaSanctuary conceptualized a Star Trek game on the console, a modder recently made Super Mario 64 run at 60 fps using their technical know-how. The classic three-dimensional platformer traditionally runs at 30 frames per second, but optimizing the game's source code can let it stay steady between 45 and 60 fps instead. This incredible feat is achieved entirely within the Nintendo 64, rather than through a PC, which demonstrates the enduring power of the aging Nintendo hardware.

Star Trek: The Next Generation is an iconic part of pop culture, with its colorful cast of characters being instantly recognizable to any sci-fi fan. SpinaSanctuary has perfectly translated the series into an Ocarina of Time-style title, using mechanics like Ocarina songs and masks to reflect various elements of the show. Thanks to skillful animation and creativity, Star Trek 64 looks like it could be an actual Nintendo title from back in the 1990s.
