Every Thor MCU Appearance Ranked By Letterboxd | ScreenRant
It's crazy to think that Thor of all the MCU characters is getting a fourth film this year with Thor: Love and Thunder. Thor has certainly struggled a bit since his introduction in 2011 when it comes to his solo outings and he's appeared in far fewer films than his partners on the Avengers.
Audiences tend to agree that Thor solidified as a character with his third film, Thor: Ragnarok. Looking back on his journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Letterboxd shared some opinions of Chirs Hemsworth's God of Thunder.
7 Thor: The Dark World (2013) - 2.5/5
After the events of The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World sees Thor bring Loki back to Asgard to stand trial. When the Dark Elves kill Friga, Thor teams up with Loki to try and stop them from harnessing the power of the Either. After Loki's supposed death, Thor and Jane go back to Earth where they hope to stop Maleketh once and for all.
Sadly, this film is considered one of the worst in the MCU. Many people point to a weak script and poor acting from some of the actors. But Hemsworth always enjoyed playing Thor and that certainly comes off in this one.
6 Thor (2011) - 2.9/5
Thor introduced audiences to the Asgardian God of Thunder, Thor. When Thor is banished to Earth after provoking the Frost Giants into war, he befriends a scientist named Jane Foster. Meanwhile, Loki ascends to the throne of Asgard and enacts his plan to wipe out the Frost Giants and kill his brother at the same time.
Most users on Letterboxd tend to find this one bland. Though Kenneth Branagh's attempt to make this film feel grand and Shakespearian doesn't go unnoticed. Sadly for the majority, the movie falls short as an introduction to one of the key Avengers. Thor is probably one of the best movies where the hero and villain are related.
5 Avengers: Age Of Ultron (2015) - 3.1/5
Thor joins the Avengers once again in Avengers: Age of Ultron. After taking down the Hydra base where Loki's scepter was held, Tony and Bruce create Ultron which now wants to destroy the world. Thor receives a vision about the Infinity Stones and helps create Vision. Now the expanded team roster has to stop Ultron before he enacts his plan.
There are some great quotes that prove Thor is one of the best Avengers, but sadly none of them are in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Thor doesn't get much to do with the team-up films. Most of his arc in this movie is foreshadowing the events of his next solo film. Mostly this film feels like a mess to the users on Letterboxd. While the character interplay is good and always fun to watch, the film fails to recapture the magic of the first team-up film.
4 The Avengers (2012) - 3.7/5
When Loki arrives on Earth to steal the Tesseract for Thanos, Thor isn't far behind him. After a quick fight with Iron Man and Captain America, Thor teams up with them and S.H.I.E.L.D. to figure out what Loki's plan is. When Loki escapes, the heroes have to come together to stop his invading Chitari army. This culminates in a very satisfying MCU final battle.
It was truly great seeing these heroes team up for the first time. Many people have expressed their undying love for this film. There are a few who point out that it might be aging poorly, but it's no doubt a fun time. Having all these established characters interact for the first time was a moment in history that won't soon be forgotten.
3 Thor: Ragnarok (2017) - 3.9/5
Thor: Ragnarok picks up with Thor after he's been away from Asgard for a number of years, trying to track down the Infinity Stones. When he learns that Loki has taken over the throne, he returns and together the two find Odin, just in time to watch him die. Odin's death releases Hela, the Goddess of Death, and Thor and Loki become stranded on a junk planet named Sakar. Now they have to find a way home and free Asgard from Hela's tyranny.
Taika Waititi was able to breathe new life into the Thor franchise. After two films that failed to meet audience expectations, Thor: Ragnarok comes out to be one of Letterboxd users' favorite MCU films. The humor, while it doesn't work for everyone, found plenty of fans, and stripping Thor of his iconic imagery and hammer ended up being a breath of fresh air. Jeff Goldblum's Grandmaster, who has some of the best quotes, was a welcome addition as well.
2 Avengers: Endgame (2019) - 3.9/5
The final Avengers film, Avengers: Endgame saw Thor at his lowest after killing Thanos. Since he blames himself for Thanos' actions, he has neglected his surviving people and let himself go. He rejoins the Avengers to set everything right by going back in time to the events of Thor: The Dark World where a talk with his mother helps pull him out of his darkness.
Thor's arc in Avengers: Endgame can be a controversial topic for some at this time, but the emotional weight of what he's going through has resonated with many Letterboxd users. Seeing Thor and the rest of the MCU heroes team up against Thanos is constantly talked about as one of the best moments in the franchise.
1 Avengers: Infinity War (2018) - 4.0/5
Avengers: Infinity War picks up with Thanos having destroyed the Asgardian refugee ship from the end of Thor: Ragnarok. After killing Loki, Thanos leaves Thor to die but he's picked up by the Guardians of the Galaxy. Thor, Rocket, and Groot then go to find a weapon that can kill Thanos, an ax named Stormbreaker. After receiving the ax, the three of them return to Earth to kill Thanos.
This was the first time that Thor got an actual emotional arc in a team-up film and for the most part, people resonated with it really well. Losing Loki impacted him in ways audiences hadn't seen before. Not to mention his interplay with Rocket got people very excited for Thor: Love and Thunder.
